Rev. Al. L. Troutman, the able and
• fficient pastor of the East Rome cii
cuit has just closed a gracious series
of revival meetings at Spring Creek
He was assisted by Rev, R J. T, Gib.
son, Rev, J W, Bale, and Rev. P. C
Fletcher. Many were converted,many
reclaimed, and the church revived
and built up Air. Troutman is a
faithful, consecrated man of God and
he is making marked advancement in
tiisncble calling.

It continues to strike me,. that
of all the “slick ducks’’ who have
ever known Rome and deceived
Romans, there is none “slicker"
■ han “Lord Beresford,’’ and J know
of but one resident who iu more
“snakey’’ in his dealings witn thf
citizenry of this city,
***
1 have had many of Beresford's,
letters, to various people over the
-date, forwarded me and have been
shown various other letters writen
by him to men who were perfect
•Grangers to him* In every letter
he either seeks to obtain money
under some beautifully toid story,
or most adroity lays a plan by
which he may enlist the efforts ot
the party addressed, in assiting
him to liberty.
*
* *
Ou a of his latest efforts comes
in the shape of the following peti
tion sent to parties in this city
and occompanying a most pathetic
letter appealing to them to circu
late it and solicit signatures:
*
* *
We the undersigned being ac
quainted with W, S. Beresford and
thoroughly conversant with all
the unfortunate circumstances le
suiting in his confinement in the
Penitentiary, submit the following
statement in the hope that it maj
beof some service to him in his ef
forts to obtain executive clemency.
*
* *
Ist. —That Beresford has served
twelve months in the Peuitientiary
besides having been c nfinsd in
Floyd County Jail for nearly 8
year.
*
* *
2nd.,—That his conduct during
his incarceration at his Camp has
been exemplary and beyond re
proach. excepting on one occasion,
when he ran away, but this esca
pade was committed when he was
laboring under extraordinary ex
citement. consequent on various
rep >rts that he was to be transfer
red to the Coal Mines, chained,
etc, etc., and we are satisfied that
he was “non composmentes” at the
time.
o o o
This offence we have condoned
and take pleasure in asserting
that we now have more confidence
i.i his integrity, reformation and
firm resolves to attone for a wast
ed life, then we have had at any
time since we became acquainted
with him.
o o o
Having every opportunity to
closely observe his actions, habits
and general beeiug, we have arriv
ed at the conclusion that he has
been sufficiently punished, that no
further good resultscan be obtain
ed by keeping him under the ban,
and that he realizes his past errors
and is truly repentant,
0 0 0
We consider that he ought to
be given a chance, and entertain
no fears as to the result, being
convinced that he will emerge
from here with an abounding faith
in his God, which must necessary
ly make him true to himself and
his fellw creatures.
o o o
Now on the heels of the above I
want to quote a verse or two from an
epistle from the lord to Christian
gentleman and leading citizen at
Blakely, Ga, The letter is written
from the penitentiary camp at Kra
mer and opens thusly:
*
* *
Dear sir: Impaired health, constant
work and extreme nervousness have
pi evented the possibility of my reply
'ng to your brotherly letter, I have
essayed many times to write, but in
every instance I was compelled to re
linquish ihu attempt. For some lime
pns I have found it impossible to re
main at anv occupation for more than
a few moments at a time, the terrible
mental strain of the two preceding
years having seriously affected me,
my own consolation and help has
been the Blessed Saviour, my ini
piic.it faith in Him has saved me from
sinking under the weight of my
heavy burdens.
*
* *
“J pray for liberty, that I may
go forth m the world, relate my
experience and glorify His name ’’
(where was he eaptured when he
male his effort to escape a>nd was
apprehended in Americus? and
did not the gay “lord" experience
a “change of heart’’ while in the
Floyd county jail and then bleed
the Rome Y. Al. C. A- for all he
could get?)
*
* *
“I have organized a Sabbath
school among the colored comvices
and supply them with religious
literature, but the ground has
not proveu very fertile.’’ (meaning
that the “collection” was poor.)
*
* *
“With the liberty accorded me
by the officials, lam enabled to
attend divine services regularly
at the negihboring churches, where
lam always warmly welcomed.
God has gifted me with a fair voice
and I lead the singing.” (We re
spectfully call Governor Northern’s
attention to the unusual liberties
being extended to this lying hypo
ent —If he is not lyiug in his holy
letter.)
oo o ,
“A protract© 1 meeting is now
being he d about two miles from
Kramer; 1 went over there last
night, we had a glorious time. I
intend going again tonight and
next Sunday,”(Of course for on
Sunday morning they generally
••pass the hat” and Beresford is
lav mg lor the moi.ey that may be
“iu it’’)
*
* *
In speaking of his hook he says.
T regret to say it was not a fi
nancial success lor I lost about
MOO on the speculation. As a mat
ter of fact the business was poorly
managed by the man who under
took to look after my interest iu
Atlanta."( Lost $400)

Now aint the“lord”just to“slick’
for anything—so pure and good
so meek and modest about [his ly
ing—but lets all of us rest until to
morrow when I will finish the
chapter
[to be continued]
DeVflnme
It is the name of the man who probably stands
the highest in the printing craft. It is.
therefore, right that the most handsome typs
ever cast from a type-founder’s matrix
should bear the name of DeVlnne. There are
four styles of DeVinne now being cast by
the various foundries. “ DeVinne,”
“DeVinne Slope," " DeVinneShaded” and
” DeVinne Outline "
DeVinne Outline
Is the style used above, and is by far the
most refined of ail the hamlsome DeVinne
faces. There is something about its modest
beauty that seems especially to attract to its
use the advertiser who is conscious that
the article he wishes to present to the public
rests on its own intrinsic nrerit. and does not
therefore need the bombast of black-faced
type to emphasize its claims.
You May Have Noticed
That literary works of the highest character,
such as the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Century Dictionary, etc., invariably choose a
modest type, such as this, to advertise their
merits. This is especially true of the first
named work, which Is almost Invariably
brought to your notice by a line of thia
" DeVinne Outline."
