President Jack King of the Merchants National said to me 1 this morning. “It was one of those little things that are sprung on us sometimes, and while we are not to blame still we are for the mo ment utterly helpless. ♦ * ♦ Then he told me how it had be come a custom for the Electric Street Car Co. to pay its motor men and brakemen on the 10th. of each month while the Engineers, tiremen and other employees were paid on the 25th. He says that some days ago engineer Watts told him that he wanted to be paid off on the 10th. * ♦ Later Mr. Watts called on Supt. Green who refered him to Mr. King. Mr. King told him that he did not care to make new rules. About night, Superintendent Green discovered the fires under the boil ers banked. No notice had been given, but the minerature strike was on, aud the city was, so far as the engineer and firemen were concerned, in total darkness. * * * After some tall hustling, a for mer engineer was secured and the fires fed. The new man however did not understand the machinery perfectly on so short notice and ■ was compelled to stop the big en gines a number of times. The strikers were paid off up to date today—and the plant with new labor will be operated in future. * * * Dr. Corput, Hoiuv’i kitver boss doctor, headed a party of sportsmen ou Saturday night and went out for a chase after the Mexican lion. Only a few Romans were in the crowd, but it Six Mile Station John Porter and a crowd of neighbors with a bi» pack of dogs had gathered, and in a few hours the bay of the honest watch dog was only a window by the side of the yelp sent up by the hounds and curs. The willipus- wollipus was chased many miles but was never ketched. * ** Last night Col Paul Fenner, et al to the tune of 72 men and boys had a midnight tun. Dr. Corput assures me that the personal of the expedi tions could not be beaten—and that every individual went armed to the teeth. Several of the men had bay onets on their muskets, and there were no less than seven pitchforks and 3 1-2 pairs of brass knucks in the crowd. The end of this Mexican lion tail is with the lion aud not in the keeping of my friends—the Reese brothers. * * « Notice the handsome iron stair way put ou the new King build ing and then feel proud of the fact that it is a Rome made job, in behalf of the city's progress thank everybody’s friend, Juuius George the hustler. * * * Have you read Capt. W. H . Steel’s add in another column? If not, do bo at once aud then go and see him and his big stock of bar gains. He has consolidated two big stocks and working with the good will of both his own aud of carver & Harpers he is bound to make his presence felt in Rome’s commercial life. Read his add i aud govern yourself accordingly **» John Hargis remarks chat if be ing a decoration to a soda water ■ counter fits a man for enjoying life, then he wants it understood by his many friends that he is a coun terfitter of the first water—soda water being understood, * * * The sewy-side is the idside, when it comes to pig pens and hog lots. jnambe.' uu d Eye and Skin Dintm-a. John P. Davis, 15d. Ordinajy. Does Your Boy Need Britannfca? Ewanhw / OSL V A- A Youth Is the period. It Is then that the mind is freest from care, the imagination unhampered, the memory most retentive, the eye brightest, and the nature most susceptible. What a boy reads in this period becomes so indelibly impressed upon his nature that it becomes a part of his very character. This is a time when a parent’s responsibility Is greatest. It is not enough to tel! the boy what he ought to become. Most boys are not overly susceptible to didactic teaching. You can usually lead him a mile easier than you can drive him a rod. See that he has the proper surroundings, and a little encouragement, and it is surprising how readily he develops a taste for the best In literature. Let that taste be developed, and there is little danger as to his future. It was Dm Ph nil i ps Brooks Who said; "Show me what books a boy reads, and I will read you his destiny. ’ I How important it Is, then, that your home should be provided with books of the highest character. Fairy tales, and even, perhaps. "Buffalo Bill ” stories, have their place as developer, of a taste for reading, a sort of literary mill*, as it were, but unless the boy soon shows a preference for the stronger meat of practical knowledge, history, travel, etc., you may ba sure that he is mentally unsound, or that there has been something radically wrong in his education. The Encyclopaedia Britannica has rightly been termed “the concentrated essence of the whole world’s wiadom." Let your boy read its interesting pages, and he wiii soon look with disdain upon " flashv ” literature. We are continually underestimating a boy's capacity for large ideas. There is nothing »o attractive as truth. Give him the material out of which to construct large ideas. Put Britannica In the home, where he can consult it continually, and as he attains manhood lia will find no place in literary or professional life to which he may not aspire. Seize the present opportunity to provide a proper library for your home. It requires an Investment of but Ten Cents a day, If you order from The Atlanta Constitution > while it may be had at introductory price*. "■'X/’’ BO Only $6,00 by the E. T.
