Dear, laughing brook, the day is long And I am over weary. Love, will you soothe me with your song To test and visions cherry? How soft your voice—it seems to float Away beyond my hearing, And to my senses a pleasure boat Is leisurely appearing. So I will wander with the tide, Into a silent ocean: Eternity were not so wide, More exquisite in motion. Oh, voyage of untroubled ways, And peace beyond all learning, Could fancy anchor in your bays, Forgotten the returning A silvery laugh is signaling a glad, incoming steamer; And into port I idly swing, A most persistent dreamer. * * * * * The brook is faithful to the end. And leaps to greet its waking— A faithful lover to the end, Thyo’ all my sad forsaking. —George E. Bowen. PICKING OUT A HUSBAND. Girls, you don’t want a man who is afraid of good, honest work, and ' there are lots of them who are ; you don’t want to spend the very best of your youth in living to reform a man or shield him, so that you will not become a claiment for the pity of your friends; you don’t want a man who is stingy, and what girl with two grains of sense is not sharp enough to discove 1 ’ this trait in the lovers? Neither do you want a spend-, thrift ; you don’t want a jealoi s husband, for he is about as dan. gerous to live with as a lunatic; you don't want a dandy, who curls his hair, has his nails manicured and uses a face bleach, and you wouldn't believe how many such specimens are floating around in good society; you want a whole souled, lovable gentleman. He must —now take out yonr memorandum book—be courteous t<> ’the aged and kind to the little folks, the sort of a fellow who knows that a girl loves flowers ami sweetmeats, but who is not such a fool that he would pawn his over coat to get them ;the kind of a chap who disdains to fall into rhapsodies over every pretty woman he meets, who realizes that life is not a joke, but who in his seriousness is never depressing; he must be gentle, sympathetic, honorable, just; with enough romance about his make up to save him from being prosiac, and, above all, he must be so sit uated in life that he can attempt the role of home-maker without fear of being a dismal failure. Where will such a paragon be found? Keep your eyes wide open. If you do not-meet with him, take my advice and join the sisters who prefer single bliss to wedded wretchedness. MME NECKER’S NOTE BOOK. A curious anecdote was told la'eiy about Mme. Necker the clever mother of h still more il lustrious daughter— Mme. de Stael. It seems that a certain M. de Ohastellard was invited by her to i dinner par f y and he by some mistake arrived at the house too mirly and sat down in the salon to wait till the hostess appealed, While ho wandered about the rooms and presently fauud behind a cushion a little book which he took up supposing it to be a book of extracts copied in. But to bis suprise he read a long resume of the subjects upon which Mme. Nicker intended to talk that evening and they were actually labeled “Talk with Mme, So and So on such a thing,” every expect ■d guest being mentioned byname v.ih th" piticular topics suitable to the taste ’.nd calibre of each, M. de Castellai s was of course in the list and he had just time to see what he might expect in the v> ayof conversation at dinner when ■he mistress of the house came in mH he quickly put the book back whence he had taken it. ‘Hid I a daughter to trim,’ 1 said x woman of the world, “one accom plishment above all should ba taught her —to make herseif agreeable with out. decending to make fun of other people. Much, if not most, of the fun cur rent among young folks consists in picking others to pieces. Bright peo ple are given to using their wit very freely upon others who have the mis fortune to come near them. Women especially regard the world outside their immediate circle as created to afford their amusement, not of the most amiale kind. They are not discriminating enough to see what underlies and offsets the pecu liarity which provoke their fun. The ill dressed, hurried woman is commonly trying to curry affiirs whose burdens her critics would shirk shamelessly. No wonder if the brave spirit steps awkwardly and becom ingly under the load she can but just bear without breaking. Those who bait their fun on her must laugh and laugh again unheed • ing ” WITH 59,000,000 STITCHES. Those who have recently raised the question of the import of prison-made goods from abroad will perhaps, read with surprise that the queen will shortly be t’ e possessor of the most remarkable articles ever made in a prison. The superintendent of Aura jail some months back received an order to weave a carpet of special design for her majesty. Tnis is now complete. On ii twenty-eight of the deftest cmi victs of. the establishment havt been engaged, and the texture measures seventy-seven feet b\ forty feet, and is estimated t > c >n fain no fewer than 59.000,000 stitches. The pattern, known as the Poo na, is rarely met with, It hus a dark ground, 'upon which the de vics and border are executed in de icate shades of vegetable dyed b'Ue yellows, browns, and green I The carpet, which is of gr »at value will be used in her majesty’s Indian room at Osborn.
