Propped up with pillows in a large willow rocking chair, with his eyes tightly bandaged, sits a young man of Cambridgpport, who was struck by lightning last Saturday, but lived to tell the storv. His n one is Her ice W. Fjlgea : he lives at 258 Green St. and is one of •he k ap'Ts on the pilot beat Flor erce. It jg not too much to say that a pair o' rubber boots saved his life, M hen the storm came up on Saturday afternoon the p - lot boat Florence, was moored a quarter ot a mile from Boston light. The keepers of the boat put on their oil clothing. Sou’westers mid rubber boots and Mr Folger who 1., about twenty five years old stood ou deck observing the storm his left hand clasping the back brace a wire cord half an inch in dit meter. 1 here bad been only two flashes and no one aboard thought dan m T ™ Par ‘ Theu came a third and Mr. Bolger knew nothing for over an hour. The current evidently selected the highest object—the bamboo pole above the main top mast and tore it into small pieces after it bad ripped the flag off, The the electricity came down the backstay into Folger. His rub ber hoot, however, offered resist ance and so part of the energy branched off in another direction. As it was his left side caught the foice of the charge. Luckily three women were a •oaid, comprising a summer pleas urc party, and one of them proved an expert m this emergency case. >tter an hour of rubbing and dos ing, Bolger began to show signs of iite and complained of a severe li'.i'lache, the sensation of seasick npssa paralyzed condition of his yltside and throat, and a prickly feeling through his whole body. A Long Time Under Wetter. It requires much pluck and tenacity of purpose to revive a half drowned man, at times, as it does to effect hie rescue from the water. There was an instance at Asbury Park lately, and another at Rock away, where men were revived con siderably over an hour after they had been taken out of the water by the indefatigable work of the people who bad undertaken their resuscitation. A boy in Long Island sound, who bad been under the w ater fifteen or twenty minutes, and who was given up for dead by the majority of the spectators, was brought back to life after two Lours of continued friction the application of ‘hottcwels, and the modern sjsfeui of compressing and expanding the lungs by raising and lowering the arms of the patient. 1 his latter rescue was accom plished by a physician who had made a study of the matter of re viving people who liave apparently died in tho watoj :aufi be tyaa ef o?Gdinply panHsGmt aqtf t • iu his efforts to restore breath to the boy’s body. Toward the end of his exerflous he was looked upon as a fantis up on the subject, and .all but oue of the people who had bo willingly helped him at the outset, shook their heads and retired from the work. But the physician and the old woman kept at work until the boy breathed faintly and was finally fully restored to life. Then the doctor tumbled over and fainted from his excessive exertions. There would seem to be reason ♦o believe that a very large propor tion of the people: who are given up as dead when taken from the water might be saved if there were a few monos heroism and of ro s u s c i t a t i ou.
