I I received a letter this morning from Judge N. G. Trout, |of Pen dergrast, Ga., the clever citizen of that place who was here last week, and who had the body of the jnur dered man exhumed at Seney thinking it might be his lost son. His letter this morning tells me that he has just received a mes sage from his boy and that he is yet in the land of the living. I just know there is joy, and lots of it in the Trout home, and it doe ß me good to think of it. , * * * I notice that the wild lands of the federal government, familiarly known as the public building site, has been cleared off. Whether this was done in quest of the “Mexican Lion” which has been jangling there, or as an inquest over the prospects of a new building.—l know not. Therefore I am wait ing. o o o On last Friday night at the home of Mr. Fred Story of Floyd Springs, Judge Cicero Hammond united the lives of Miss Mattie Stewart and Mr. AV. R. Reeves. The knot was only the tightening of the lovers knot already tied by the happy young people, and it was performed most gracefully by the big hearted klever young judge. GOO I notice that my friend Joe Hol- ■ loway, the former “Wonder Store’ man, has accepted a position in the notion and shoe department of W. H. Coker & Co. Joe has bush els of friends who will follow him to his new house. We congratulate Messrs, Coker & Co. on such a valuable acquisition. * « * Quite an enthusiastic crowd went np to Dalton this forenoon to witness the endorsement which the Seventh Congressional Con vention will put upon that brainy Democrat and courageous leader, Hon, John W Maddox—better I known as “Our John.” * » * ' Os course any man versed in j reading the signs of the times and I with a thimble full ot gumption : knows that Judge Maddox is ■ stronger today than he has ever ; been with the masses in this s« c ■ti*>n before. Judge Maddox has a i record now that he did not have :in the last campaign. A record i welded link by link while he was ' ably representing our people in congress —a record which needs no defense with his masters, the toil ing masse* of the“bloody seventh” —Tom Watson,Dr. Flopper Felton aud the“dark horse” to the cou- i trary notwithstanding. * * Among the changes of base iu i mercantile circles I notice that L. G, Todd, the popular grocer is moving into the vacant store on the Kiukuid kotner, next to Rhu dy’s furniture house Mr. Todd will occupy this building for 30 days whunhe will finally rm ve next door into his father’s store, now occupied by Mrs, AVardlaws milli nery house. Mrs. Wardlaw moves on the 15 into the house occupied by Hanks & Roberts as a furni ture house. * * * Mrs. J. P. M. Byrd, of the Fifth VA aid is at Alexis, Ala. visiting her mother, Mrs. Jane Vandiver, for a few days. She will go from Alexis to Peidmout and spend a week with her daughter Mrs. Lula Har bor of that plucky little city. * * * Mr. A. 0. Garrard has moved his handsome stock of millinery from the stand so long occupied by him in the Shorter bhick into the elegant store room of the Medical l building next door above Messrs A. B. McArver & Co’s. “Bee Hive,” where he and Mrs. Garrard are at home to their old patrons and the public generally. Mr. and Airs. Garrard will leave for marketin a few days and when they return will bring to Rome, as usual, Hhe very latest styles and just what every lady wants, “a regular love of a bonnet.” o o o Yesterday the courtship of Mr John Harper and Mis* Fan nie Moore, daughter of Capt. J. T Moore culminated at the altar iu the office of Judge Walter Harris. Mr Harper had just returned to t iecity aud assisted by a few r nds and relatives soon spirited the brice from her fathers re i lence on Br »t< • St and in apair of minute* after her afrivrl »t the justice's office the knot was tied and Mr. and Mis John Harper were united for life l and were the recipients of numer ous congratulations. o p o As promised by Prof. Ford through this column some time ago he has given Rome a much better orchestra than the Opera House has enjojed for at least four seasons. With such an orchestra a much smaller per cent of the males of the audience will be compelled to “go out to see a man ” I have heard many complimentary , remarks on last nights playing. ‘ <;• * * Sport Mi'A 1 lister is a good ’an ami ’t was a fortunate move on the part >f Mefsr* J B.
