With Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest

Every year for many past, tho

enthusiastic over ihe extent and
, magnificence of the Barnum &

which will be seen here exactly as
it was in New York.
But what will be said of it this
year, superior as this season's

There are twenty’ acts in which
perfectly trained animals are seen
with twenty comical clowns. Sev

Europe before Barnum & Baily
engaged them.
After the acts iu the three cir

stages numerous hippodrome races
take place, And after these the re
markable exhibition of trained an
imals in the specially constructed
iron-barred arena, in which lions
and lambs tigers and goats bears
and sheep ponies and elephants
and other wild and domestic beasts
take part.
Then there is Chiko and his
bride Johanna, the giant gorillas
only two of the world at present in
capivity. The grand Ethnological
Congress of savage and idolatrous
human beings, with representatives
from nearly all the savage and
heathern countries in the world,
an equestrian exhibition by wild
and fierce Cossacks and hundreds
of others.
Besides the most marvelous feats
in mid-air the whole entertainment
is of such a grand character as to
amaze eyeryone. A Chidren circus,
too, especially provided for the
delection of the little folks. The
new million dollar free street pa
rade will take place on the morn

said to be the finest of its kind
on earth. It will all be here on
October 16th.

Incencfinary Origin?
Detroit, Mieh , September 5. —
! Dispatches from the upper penin*
suiar of Michigan shows that the
rainfall in that region yesterday
and last night has effectually’ put
a stop to the forest fires, and will
be the means of saving millions
of piues and lots of homesteaders
c ops and bouses.
The damage already done, how
ever, is immense and in many lo
calities total loss can only be
avoided by the immediate cutting
ot timber.
There is jconsiderable evidence
that many of the fires are of inc-u
--diary origin, were set by men who
knew the schorched pines would
have to be cut at once, thus giving
theya work.
The names will also force into
tin? market much pine that was
held by non-logging capitalists for
the purpose of speculation. At any
rate hundreds of men will be given
immediate employment.
It is thought nearly every’ foot
of standing pine in Ontanoganon
county is burned —fully’ 500,000,-
000 feet. The Nester estate has
lost 90,000,000; Trout Creek Lum
ber company, 20,000,000; Diamond
Malch-Ompany’, 150,000,OCR). The
balance is owned by homesteaders
at Paynesville and Bruce’s Cross
ing.
Many cattle and horses were
burned, but no human lives were
lost though there have been many
perilous situations and narrow es
capes.
The lailrouds have large gangs
at work repairing road-beds and
bridges, and are rapidly getting in
to shape to resume traffic,
COUNTING THE DEAD BuDIKS

ROBBING THE DEAD.
Ghouls are at work in the vicin
ity of Sandstone. A party fro lll
Duluth, under James Bailey, came
down to help bury the dead, and
while searching around at noon
came upon a gang who had broken
open and rilled some safes, and
when Bailey and his party’ met
them they had just found a cistern
from which they had just hauled
fifteen dead bodies and robbed
them of jewelery—rings, trinkets,
etc., and were throwing the bodies
back in the well.
Bailey and his party’ were un
armed, but the ghouls took to
their heels and escaped. A frame
powder magazine at Sandstone, a
portion of which was left standing,
and which was empty, was torn <
down for material for coffims. j
