They have Examined the books and are Convinced THAT THE BRITANNICA ■ • Sold by the Constitution is Free From the Objection able MatterlContained in the Maxwell Sum merville Edition. Jolfn H. Reynolds President. The First National Bank. Rome Ga. Sept. 4th. 1894. Constitution: I am pleased to see that your new Encyclopedia Britannica does not contain the very objectiona ble references to the literature and the conduct of the people of the j South that is contained on page l 630 of the Maxwell Sommerville Edition (9th.) American Reprint VOL. I. of the Encyclopaedia Bri tannica which article I condemn'’ John H. Reynolds. From Judge W. H. Dabney. Rome, Ga., September, 3. 1894.- I have examined the Atlanta Constitu tion Edition of the Encyclopoedia Britannica and compaired it with the Maxwell Sommerville Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica of 1891. The latter contains many unjust, and untrue statements about, and reflec tions upon our Southern jieople which in my judgement should ex clude it from southern libraries. The former mentioned is a good work, and well worth perusal and would be a useful addition to the library of any southern gentleman. W. H. Dabney From Col- D. B. Hamilton. R:ms Ga.,Sept 3 —This writiting is to state that I have examined the Atlanta Constitution Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and compared it with the maxwell Summerville edition of 1891 pre sented to me and find that the former named does not contain the objectionable matter which is un true and unjust to the South, but that the above named Sommerville edition does contain matter against the South which is untrue and misleading. D. B. Hamilton. From Ralqh Dille of Rome, Ga. I have examined the Atlanta Constitution edition of Encyclo paedia Britannica, carefully com paring it with the Maxwell Sum merville edition of Britannica and say I do not see how parents can place confidence in the informa tion given in the Summerville work on “American Literature.’’ Do you wish your children to believe the untruthful and unjust statements regarding the South contained in the last named edition. It is unfit to place in the hands of any child, let alone the Southern youth. Ralph Dille. Testimony of Prof. R. J. Gwalt ney of Rome Ga. I have read carefu 5y the article oe American literature in the Maxwell Summerville Edition of the Britan nica which is defamitc ry of the south and her authors which shoul 1 be cc n lemned by every lover of the south and should not find its way into any southern home, upon ex amination of the same article in the Constitution edition of Britannica, [ find nothing at all objectionable, but on the other han J , one worthy of the south, which I can heartily endorse. AND THEY FOUGHT But the Young man Kent his Girl- Wife all the Same AGP.ETNA GREEN AFFAIR With a Personal JOiff culty De nouncement in the Hotel Reaction Room Where the Fathers and Groom got Mixed Baltimore Md., Sept. 5. The elopment of a young couple from the Bel Air and the sub squent marriage in this city re sulted last night in an exciting personal encounter at the Hotel Rennert. The bride is Elizabeth Bissell, aged 16, daughter of Benjamin Bissell, agent of the new Central Coal Company, with offices in this city. The young man is Mr. L. Derry Passano, 28 years old, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and a professor of mathematics in the School of Technolgy at Boston. Mr. Passano’s father is president lof the Eclipse Manufacturing Company, of Baltimore, and was atone time a vice president of the Standard Oil Company. Both families are well known in Baltimore society, but reside in Bel Air, a few miles from the city. The young couple ran away yes terday. They have been acquainted about a year. Three weeks ago Mr. Passano went to the girls father and announced in a straightfoward way the love between them, and asked the parental indorsement. Mr. Bissell would notgive it and forbade his daughter to receive the young man. This did not di minish the love of the young peo ple. They wrote to each other let ters that had nothing to do with mathematics, and Mr. Bissell says young Passano’s sisters smuggled these missives to the girl. Yesterday afternoon the girl left the house under pretense oi paying a visit to Dr. A. H. Rich ardson, of Belair, who had been treating her for granulated eyelids. She met her lover, who had a wag on in waiting. His parents also went along, and Mr. Frank Han cock, who is engaged to Miss Pearl Passano, the professor’s sister, performed the duties of coachman. They drove to Baltimore and went at once to the residence of Rev. Lyttleton F. Morgan, 1312 Lyn den avenue, by whom they were married. Ta? party then went to the Al tomount Hotel and registered with the understanding that they would go to ’he Hotel Renuert for a wed ding supper. When they got. down to the Ren nert it chanced that Mr, Bissell, father of the girl had just arrived. The bridal party was in .the recep tion room of the hotel. Mr. Bissell entered and a scuflle essued. Mr. Bissell attacked J the jMessers Pa. - sano with his cane and fist, but at taches of the hotel parted the bel ligeieuts before any serious dam age was done. The irate father was tak»*u out into the lobby, and the bridal party was quietly spir ited away to the Altamont, where they spent th , night. Professor and Mrs. Passano, left the hotef today saying they intend ed going at once to Boston.
