We have i aroused the bitterest opposition rout other shows, but we succeeded while they have failed. We publicly plead guilty to ; having reduced the price of admis sion in the North and South and iiave caused other shows to (follow our example, and now in their effort to “make a virtue if necessity,” they lay claim to ’being the originators of low prices. These showmen, who are so filled •.Trith .s desire to protect the South ern people, and are slopping over with virtue, ought to know that the Southern people are not so jgullible as to he misled into be lieving the alleged interview of a •“Southern gentleman,”as printed •ji a hand-bill and circulated ex dteaeively, is anything other than i fake of the thinnest sort, and it ’-will not strengthen their cause to tally alarming extent, under cover *pf so thin a disguised attempt to s.lraw in a “Southern gentleman.” "SFe have had an experience of /-.■many years among the Southern f;ae<spse, and believe we know their - character, and unless we are very 7n'ici; mistaken, Southern gentle ersteu have a habit of attending strictly to their own business, and , »• mid not lend themselves to “rake t'o c ’ hot chestnuts in a Yankee .trick.” .Not content w ith assail ing us in tprisii and press., they have destroy faced or covered over our bills ’ln the country, and have proven f themselves to be “All Honorable ’Veti," as Mark Antony said of the mwi who murdered Caesar at the fifeot cf Pompey’s statute. Did it ever occur to them that don’t fight pigmies? We are vnevar afraid of the weak. It is the strong who sre feared. We have the largest and best i ehuw we ever brought South, and wa *a~ert and challenge contradic tion that ours is the only big show thud ■ever came South in itsentire : tty We have always added to it, h v vLik other shows invariably cut i dew. when visiting the South. We show to the people here I Jibe finest horses, the richest pa | aratie, <the best circus, the largest Ihsnienagtrje, the most thrilling hij - |&p<Gd>ome races, and the finest and Ibiggest tents ever seen North or While other shows have falling by the wayside Solis Brothers are Hushed with victory and in the zenith of success. IT is TRUE We hove kept aloof from any questionable artifices or the intro duction of “lake features.' We have never masqueraded in bor rowed plumes. We have never hired any man’s name. We never exhibited painted ele phants and claimed they were “sa cred.” We have never exhibited a rep resentation of drunken Pagan or gies and called it a spectacle. We have never exhibited hal breed and half-cast, negroes under the high-sounding title of “An Ethnological Congress.” We have kept. our show clean, healthy and moral, and it is patronized by the best people every where. The refined, good and pure people North and iSoulh un derstand this aud do uol hesitate to take their families. Being heads of families ounelves and having children of cur own, we would not present anything that would offend ihe most fastidious. Any persons who sees our outfit will at once understand why other shows fear to follow us. Thus far we have spoken. We will now let others speak. Yours truly, SELLS BROTHERS. The following unsolicited edito lial from the Louisvi ie Courier Journal of Sep. 9, amply proves our assailants have borne false witness against us THE C RCUS LEAVES F R OWEN-BORO After giving four performance to the largest crowds seen here in vears. Sells Brothers’ Circus left last night for Owensboro. Every thing about the show is clean, bright, and has been reorganized and enlarged for the annual South ern tour. The menagerie contains the largest and rarest collections of rare wild beasts in captivity. The show is all Sells Brothers c'aim for it, and they will no doubt do an excellent business in the South* rn county. FROM GENERAL TAYLOR, CHIEF OF POLICE LOUISVILLE KY, It gives me pleasure to say Sells Brother’ Show in their magnitude and surpassing qualities both as to quantity of valuable properties and excellence of entertainment are fully equal to any shows ever exhibited in Louisville. The crowd ed tents the past two days, which have never been seen here before, are certainly substancial edorse ment from our citizens of the well earned popularity of Sells Broth ers’ Show. It is gratifying to this department to note the exception al management which has charac terized its stay in this city. Yours truly. THOS. H. TAYLOR, Chief of Police Louisville. Ky. Sept. 7th. 1894. United States troops around Evanston, 111., says the Washing ton Star, have discovered the iner ■ its of the “Evanston watermelon.” ' This variety of fruit, it may be ex > plained, brings a price so high that tt would startle many dealers. A small one can be sold for sl, and some of the big ones are so luscious that they bring as much as $2 or $3. They are wonderfully invigorating, too. A real thirsty man might eat a whole one and then try to kick the top oft' a flag pole. He would be in a good fight ing mood, too. It may be necessary to explain that there are some peculiarities about the “Evanston watermelon” that are not noticed in others. It is generally a small affair and does not seem to be quite as perfect as these that a man expects to have THE HUSTLER OF ROME, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER, 16 1894 17 n - f rite i’FY "fila s film sLa dad imlM.l wsluvfJ j ! v TllE GREATI;>T IN AMUSEMENTS’ " I fi | 3 F*lf I \ IHL DA .’ln Gt DftlLtl I Greatest Show On Earth I A.T ROME, I ' '■ ef-AYT NOT UNTIL OCTCB I. 311.(1 I I . ■ Z' ( • V ' - ~’ / :■ ', ‘y/ 3eghiEißg on that day a Grand Triumphant Tour of the Southern States I ; S DS S 0 » SIDE-SHOWS! <A }■■■• THE Blfi BARNUM & BAILEY SHOW. Some men kick when they get a melon that has been “plugged,” but there can be no genuine Evan ston melon that is not. How else could the whiskey be poured into it? The “plug” is the trademark, and none is genuine without it. Owing to Evanston’s well-known temperance principles, there has been a great demand for these melons. It took the soldiers a few days to discover the Evanstonian way of doing business, but after they found it out plantation ne groes could not evince a greater fondness for melons. The melons in most instances do not contain the genuine good stuff, but are filled with the variety known as “forty rod,” and two drinks are warranted to make a man feel that he is somewhere else. The result has been during the last day or two that General Miles’ soldiers have spent considerable of their time in the guardhouse, their fondness for the Evanston water melons having either made them unfit for duty or especially quar relsome. Two Fishes on one Hook. Joel G. Miller, of this place, placed a number es outlines in the C calico creek, expecting to have a fine mess of fish by next morn ing, and was considerably surprised when he learned that he had caught both a snapper and an eel on one hook. The eel weighed two po-nnds and , ha.l evidently been caugh ttirst .The snapper weighed nine pounds and had started to make a meal off the eel, commencing near the head, which be had almost severed when . he was caught too. Mr. Miller cap tured both. Hines In Wilkes. Washington, Ga Sep’t. 15, — Judge Hines spoke here today to a crowd of 300 people, 200 of whom were populists representing seven different counties, No enthusiasm was manifested, Wilkes county will go democratic by 2,000 ma jority.
