HOLY MOSES. _____ II - I An Express Messenger “Skeerd 1 and Frightened too" A PAIR OF COFFINS Anda Sepulchral Voice Among the Packages of his Car. He Called theTraln Crew to his As sistance. An express agent running be twi-en Topeka and Smith Center, had a thrilling experience one night a short time ago, says the Topeka State Journal. The night I was dark and cloudy, and the train was going about forty-five miles fin hour. The agent had locked himself in his car and was prepairing to check up the bun dle-. He was not long in noticing that two long boxes, containing coffins, I wereamovg the other express mat- I ter checked .for Manhattan. All was still in the car except the rumbling of the wheels and tlm soughing of the wind It was only natural, therefore, that the agent should jump about six feet into the air on hearing a voice apparently in one of the coffins say, “Let me out!” The express agent drew his revol ver, prepaired for anything, ulcG enquired; , j “Where are you?” ' “Let me out!” “Well, where are you?” “Le me out.” was all the answer he c nild get m a tone like a voice from the tomb. The express agent was not super | stifioup. but he was by this time thoroughly alarmed. He unlocked [ the rear door of the car and sum j a-ond the conductor, brakemaq i and porters. It was his intention to open the 1 caskets, if necessary, «nd comply with the r<>piest of tha mysterious voice. One coffin was placed at one end of the car and the other coffin , it the other end. Then the express agent enquired: ‘’Where are you now?'’ ‘•Let me out!” said the voice u -t from either coffin but from a pile of miscellaneous express mat ter where they bad ’em Stealthily and with grave fears of the mault, the crew began fur ther investigation, expecting to find any thing from a highwayman to a wild man. T hey did not find either, however, but down toward ‘he bettomof the pile they located t te voice —it was that of a parrot. 11. A. Smith sells new and second ha nd school books. > ♦5.
