A WICKED BOOK.
“If Christ Came to Congress.” Is
Comdemned.
Washington, Sept. 19.—The re
cently published book entitled “If
Christ came to Congress,’ has been
detained in the mail pending an in
vestigation by the Postoffice Depart
ment of the alleged obscenity of the
publication.
The author is M. W. Howard,
Alabama, who expects to be nomina
ted for congress by a Populist con
vention held today.
First Assistant Po-tmaster General
Jones, who has charge of the case,
has no doubts on the merits of the
case, but he hesitates to pass on the
book as an action would serve as an
advertisement.
Mr. Jones says that in the mean
time the question of detaining the
books rests with the postmasters who
receive them.
WOULD-BE MURDERER.
Sam Heard Captured and Now in
the Wilkes County Jail.
Washington, Ga., Sept. 20.
Sam Heard, a yellow negro, who
on last Saturday night a week ag°
shot on the street in Washington
another negro boy named Alex
Farrell, and for whom the govern,
or offered a reward of two hundred
dollars, was brought in and lodged
in jail here last afternoon by Mr.
John Cade.
He was capt ured just across the
river from Lisbon in South Caroli
na at a negro church on Sunday
night. The boy whom Sam shot is
still living, but the doctors say
that he can’t possibly recover as
he was shot through the brain and
is now paralyzed.
The shooting was done because
Alex was owing Sam 40 cents which
he couldn’t collect.

! SAVED THE DOG.
And the Little Fellow Showed his
Appreciation.
A unique operation has been
successfully performed by Dr.
Janies Haley, a veterinary sugeon
of New London, Conn. A hand
, some little cocker spanbl was
i brought to him a short time ago
suffering with curvature of the
spine, as the result of a kick ad
ministered by some brute.
The little fellow’s buck was
i twisted out of shape and he was
• practically helpless. His back legs
were helpless, and he could not
> move.
He was always a sufferer, and
i kept moaning and whining. Dr.
Haley thought when he first saw
> the dog the most humane thing to
do was to kill him, but he was
• such a handsome little fellow the
doctor thought he would try to
save him.
After submitting an anesthetic
: the spine was straightened and the
dog was encased in a plaster paris
jacket, swung in straps aud given
proper medicine and food Finally
the plaster was removed and the
dog stood on his feet for a moment
in a surprised sort of way, then
wagged his tail, gave a spring in
to the air, and with a loud bark
started off in a dead ruu in a cir
cle, barking like mad.
He kept itnp for about ten min
utes, and seemed anxious to show
every one he was all right. He is
just as good a dog now as he
ever was, climbs stairs without
trouble, and gets about with just
as much ease as any of his play
fellows.
The doctor is quite pr< ud of his
job, aud the owner o; the dog is,
of course greatly pleased, to say
n ithiug of the dog himself —New

KERRVILLE LYNCHING.
The Grand Jury Prosecuting the In
quiry With Zeal.
1 Thirteen men are now under in
dictment for murder in the first de
gree at Memphis, charged with be
ing accessory to the ; Kerrville
lynching. One of these men, Frank
H. Berry, of Rose Mark, is a dep
uty sheriff, and another Wm,
Thompson, was deputy under the
late sheriff.
There is al-so a weil authenticat
ed rutnor that there is a strong ef
fort backed by requisite proof, to
have Sheriff McCarver indicted.
The grand jury in its report said:
“The grand jury has had great trou
blein getting the evidence We were
satisfied the witnesses could .give
from the purpose of Jsome to con
ceal what they knew jand the fear
of others to give information.
Besides, we have reasons to be
lieve that serious obstacles were
thiowu in the way of developing
all the facts by officer whose duty
it was to render every assistance
possible to help to ferret out the
criminals”
It is claimed that the chief offi
cer mentioned is Sheriff McGarver
He has been very lukewarm in the
ma ter. audjwheu before the grand
jury told as little as possible, al
though the plot had been laid bare
to him before the .lynching occur
red, by his son.—Chattanooga
