Up one side and down the other I dont know of a more orderly city in the state than this same city of Rome. o o o Os course in a city of 12.000 t la -000 inhiihi a’ts ther ure pet p'o and people and, dher kinds of p o pie and tbeh there are people who hnve raised 4 indy curyou.s Chilian’’ who have settled here—if only for a temporary sojourn. I am inform ed that th-re is a nest of vermin that has attained a foo ■ hold in one of the hovels back of the Pod office and that these fallen creat ures, under the guise of “dress makers” are p ymg the calling of the Scarlet woman. If such b* the case 1 here predict that the Rome police force will not be long in is sueiug an order to them to m >vo. o o o I was over at Cartersville yester day and heard Rev. Sam Jones preach a sermon on the subject of Christian Citiz uiship. Sam lunes is a most remarkable man —for years he has he.d the p opl i spell bound as no other man under the sun has ever held them. That he has lost none ot his power was ev idenced yesterday when uiariy seven thousand people packed lhe great Sam Joues Tabernacle and crowded back iuto the grove on alt sides.“ rherH is but one Sam Jones’ truely but oue. o o o Yesterday afternoon in the big Tabernacle, Rev. George Stewart, preached a powerful sermon on the subject of a nation’s citizenry being the out-put of a nations home life training of boys and girls. He advocated “prayer and hickory” with such a wonderful flow of language that 1 am of the opinion that stock in “switch or chards” around Cartersville will go from “par” on up to mar for the next six months, and the kid who undertakes to “cry” it down will prove himself to be but a poor dis-cryer. * * * “Dam the Etowah” 1 feel like that is the biggest thing in sight for the city of Rome and it does strike me that where there is such stacks of power and streams of wealth rushing by our city that a company of “patriots” who love the “filthy lucre” could be found who would not hesitate until they had dammed the stream and har nessed its untamed horse power to the citys development and their °wn pecuniary advantage. Let a company be organized whos watch word will be “dammit!” New Firm. Mr. L, Baer, of New York, has rented the old McArver, stand, and will on the first of October open a general dry good and notion line. Xlr.Baer, is an enterprising gentle man and will make an acceptable addition to the business circles of Rome. Rod.b continues to grow, and confidence in the fu ure of this section is being manifested the number of new enterprises that /are opening up. There are very f ew vacant stores on Brot-d Street now. Dissolution Notice The Partnership heretofore ex isting between W. L. Collier and myself, under the firm name of Brown & Collier has been this day dissolved by mutual consent, C. Brown having sold out all his inter est injthe business to W. L. Col lier. This September 17th, 1894. C. Brown, XV. L. Collier. SHOPS ALL CLOSED, Clothing Contractors of Boston Have no Men at Work. Boston, Mass., September 21L— The shops of all the clothing con tractors in the city are closed to day and not one of the strikers are at work. The union this morning posted pickets at every shop to prevent any of the operatives from re turning to work, but the precau tion was unnecessary, as none of them showed any inclination to do so. At 9 o'clock a mass meeting of the strikers was held and the chairman of every shop crew ac counted for every man under him. The executive eomiuit’ee of the union this morning received a long list of grievances from the •pantsmakers, which they want ad justed before they will return to work. They refuse to longer furnish their own machines and ask to be placed on the same footing as the coat and vest makers. Several small contractors had applied to sign the new agreement which the strikers insist on, but itis not yet completed and probably xvill not be before tomorrow. COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Met This Mornimg to Consult Upon the Bond Question. The County Commissioners met at the Court house this morning to discuss the subject of bonds. As is known, an election has been ordered to float S4O,(XX) worth of bonds to tide over the floating debt of the county. The Commissioners debated as to the best method of floating these, and what denomination they should be, and the interest they should bear. After due deliberation they de cided to meet again Monday and tomorrow at 11 o’clock in the morning there will be a meeting of the representative men of Rome. They will meet in Captain R. G. Clark's office to advise as to the best thing to be done under the circumstan-i*es. Every citizen of the county that feels an interest in the offairs of Floyd should work for bonds as it is in the sure solution of the fi nancial problem here. _ ■ - 'LI Just opened a new line of Dress Goods and Trimmings we will be glad to show them to the ladies.
