Sa vanan is None of Your L'ttle two by Four Towns Savannah, Ga., September 25. J. F. Lester, of Valdosta, who has been making arrangements to es tablish a national bank here with a capital of SIOO,OOO, has received a letter from the competroller of the currency stating that he will have to make his capital $200,000 in order to receive a charter for a national bank. The competroller has reasons to believe that Savannah is a city of more than 50,000 inhabitants, and under the national banking laws in a city of that size or above no national tfunk can be established with a capital of less than $200,- 000. The competroller would not take the census figures, which give Savannah less than 44,000. Mr. Lewis will make it a State bank and capitalize the institution as originally intended. The remains of Mr. Hal Dick, who died in Marietta Monday morning, arrived here over the Rome Railroad, this morning at 11:80. A large party of friends and relatives accompanied the body, and a special coach conveyed them here from Marrietta. The platform around the depot was crowded with the Romp friends and former associates of Mr. Dick, who were sad over the demise of the good man. Carriages were in waiting and the body was carried at once to Myrtle Hill a long line of carri ages following. A YOUNG LADY ENTERED. Miss Gambrell Enters Mercer as the First Woman Student. The first woman student to en ter Mercer University was enrolled there yesterday in the school of pedagogy. Miss Pauline Gambrell, the eld est daughter of President J. B. Gambrell made application yester day and was duly admitted by the faculty. It will be remembered by those who are familiar with the proceed ings of the board of trustees of the collegeat their last meeting that by unanimous action Mercer's doors were thrown open to students of both sexes, and the application and admittance of Miss Gambrell will in all probability open the way tor a gr< at many other young ladies wbo.recognizing the superior advantages of the university, will now come to drink at its educa tional fount.—Macon Telegraph, PROF. Prof. Chas Lane, of the Tech nological School in Atlanta, will be here tomorrow, and tomorrow night will preach at the First Meth odist church. Prof. Lane will be accompanied by Rev. John B. Robins, the dis tinguished Atlanta divine, and both will be the guest of Dr Gib son while in the city . King iu Fifth Ward, reported that do damage had been done to the lot, and that claim for payment be refused. Committee’s report was adopted. Committee- upon the enclosure of certain lands adjoiuihg the Fourth Ward, reported that a por tion of said lands it would be ad visable to enclose within the City limits. Petition of Hume & Perkins asking a ruling of council upon the question of dray licenses with statement that the dray taat they owned did their own hauling and made no charge for directly or iu dictly. Council rulea that under such circumstaces no license was required. Petition of J., A. Dugger to have his merchants license transfered to R. T. Connally, as he had sold bis business to said Connally, granted. Petition of Seaborn Wright to have the grade of the street estab lished in front of h’s property on Third Avenue, referred to Street Committee with power to act. Petition of Mr. A. Moses and Messrs. Watters et al for reduction of license laid upon the table. petition of Charles W. Wells to be allowed to open a butcher shop in the upper portion of the town, and time for payment of license be extended to thirty and sixty days, granted it being shown that said Wells bad recentle lost leg and had a family to support and was unable to do manuel labor. Petition of A. B S. Moseley for credit upon his tax of this year for his Street tax paid in 90.91 and 92 laid on the table. Petition of J. H. Montgomery, Ala., September 24 —When the new artedan well reaoh ed a depth of 1,090 feet today (salt water was struck and considerable excitement has been occasioned there by. Cbenjists here state that when salt water is found that deep in the earth natural gas is sure to exist just below it The supposed find will be devel oped within a few days. The liveliest interest is manifested in the matter. TWO ITEMS FROM BIRMINGHAM. Birmingham, Ala,, Sept, 24 EdleyS. Dunn, Wint and Wiley Field, three white men were arrest ed at Tuscaloosa for complicity in the murder of E. Cooper a few days ago. This makes twelve arrests since the assassination grew out of a family feud. Dave Davis, a neatly dressed young white man, was badly in jured Saturday afternoon at Hele na while trying W> board a moving train. He was brought to this city and taken to the Charity hospital where he died today. STORM TOMIGHT Look out for Heavy Winds in Rome A terrible hurricane which com menced in the Islands of Cuba Sunday evening, is sweeping in this direction. The weather men say it will reach this B<ction some time to night or in the morning, but it may branch off or spend its fury before it gets here But it is well enough to watch out for it in case the prophets are right for once. If Stanton knows the- facts he knows that the Sunday Hust ler of Rome has been twelve page - for three Sundays. Perhaps Frank didn’t know—and perhaps Thank, was getting more pay for it than the Tribune does for the Sheriffs, and other official adds which it coppies from The Hustler of Rome. Stanton is famed for his humor anyhow—we admire the kuss too, even when he dent tote fair. * * * I clip this item from Frank Stanton’s bright column of this mornings Constitution: Two Georgia editors recently in herited large fortunes. They not only broke the record in this, but' failed to devote the proceeds of their vast estates to the enlarge ment of their newspapers. Floyd Superior Court continues to grind out justice. Ihe case of Johnson for the use of Henry Walker vs. J. C. and J. J. Pritnup was decided for the plaintiff. John C. Hines sued the Western I nion 1 elegraph Company for cite non delivery of a message, ami se cured a verdict of $750. Turnbull for plaintiff, Bigby Reid A Berry and Wright, HamiLbu Jfc Wright for the defendants. W. W. Hudson plead guXty to. assault and was fined $lO ana'Aosts. The court is on the' of.
