The Remains of a Prehistoric King
Unearthed Near Portsmouth.
Portsmouth, Ohio, Oct 2. —The ,
•skeleton of a man seven feet in
height was found under and old
oak on Pete Thompson’s place, a
G-w miles below this city, in Ken
tucky, to-day.
The skeleton evidently belonged
F.o a prehistoric race that threw
up the earthworks still visible at
the place and known as the “old
fort.’ ’
crown of beaten sterling silver
fiucircled the head, and there were
wry ■ Iher evidences of the prince
ly character of the “deceased.”
’The find is considered a great
ojie, as the skeleton's position un
der tire Tree proves that it must

A NEW ENTERPRISE.
A Thread and Knitting Wiiii Pifci> ‘
ably to be Located Here.
Mr. j. J. Leob, who is building
i grist mill on t he Cohen property,
is making an to get up a
r’tock ■jinpany to erect a large
•bread and knitting factory.
It is hi?-wish to secure a largo
num* <•'■ of stockholders at soo per
share, and commence the work on
the building at once. He would
manufacture spool threa 1 and all
kinds of knit underwear.
An on terprise of this nature
.could be a vast benefit to Rome,
■is they would employ about 10
hands. Let us have this factory.

Starved and Eaten by Rats.
Memphis, Tenn’., October 1. —A
■ shocking case of depravity was un
i earthed by the police today. A few
i months ago Sallie Crum, a white
; girl, employed in a Union street
cigar factory, gavejiirth to a boy
baby, which she gave to Amanda
Harris, a colored woman, to raise.
The negress took the infant to a
hovel on Washington street' where
she deliberately starved it to death.
The babe died last night and the
corpse was thrown into a filthy
room.
This morning neighbors were at
tracted to the scene by a sickening
smell, and they discovered that
rats hail eaten the head, feet and
hands away. The mother and ne
gress were arrested for murder.

THE HUSTLER OF ROME, TUESDAY OCTOBER, 2 1894.
HAM AND EGGS.
Edgar L. Wakeman, the versatile
writer and distinguishe aveler.
is printing a series of stories in the
Chicago Saturday Record. They are
the narratives of the travelers, and
ah-most readable. The luc< r1 of
Saturday Sept.,29ih contains a very
interesting story of Shermans March
as told by the Student Traveler.l is
called ‘Guidon Little Buttons of
Battery D. ’and while romance is
weaved into it, the ufacts are all
history.
The Traveler relates bow several
detached brigades and a few battab
lions of cavalry marched from Cairo,
111, down throuli the mountains of
Alabama and crossed the Etowah
river to join Sheimans command.
As a matter of fact they crossed the
river here at Rome but such is iot
stated in the article. Mr Wak an
is a talented ma*, >.nd writes a mo it
delightful story.
1 went into Mrs. Wardlaw’s mile
linary store last night, and saw the
handsome hats, ami beautiful dec
orations for the fall opening. The
store presents a lovely appearance,
and the flowers and tropical plants
scattered through the building
lends an added charm to the whole (
effect. No ladies and a very few ;
men can pass by without stopping |
to take a peep at the windows and
interior. Mrs. Wardhiw took me
back and showed me all the dainty I
hats, and even I, a man, could not 1
fail to see the exquisite taste with 1
which they were trimmed. I left 1
the store bewildered by the sight of ’
so many beautiful things, but one!
, thought kept forcing itself on me'
I —l was glad I didn’t have to buy
delicate little bits of feminine li-[
nery.
The Sunday New York Recorder
comes t<> this office laden with go
reading matter. The Recorder is
practically a new paper in the j
fi Id of Gotham journalism, but it
has leaped into immense populari-
ty. Its news service is up to the
standard, and the special articles
are all fine. The Recorder gives
away a beautiful art supplement
every Sunday, and they are worth
the price of the paper alone.
One of the most valuable publ ’
cations printed for newspaper men
and advertisers is Printers Ink. It
is a publication that appeals pecu
liarly to advertisers, and should
be taken by every one interested
in the art. It is published by Geo.
P- Rowell & Co., New York.
Tomorrow is the-day set aside
to snow the populists under, and
from reports coming in from all
sections of the State, it will be
done with great good will. If the
“pops” ever had any hopes of do
ing any thing in Floyd, I think
that such ideas have faded away.
We should give all the democratic
candidates a splendid majority.
Thus. W. Keene will have the
largest and most fashionable house
of the season Thursday night.
Seats are rapidly disappearing at
Yeiser’s, and by tomorrow noon,
all of the best seats will have been
taken. Remember that those who
■have already checked off seats
must call forthem this afternoon,
I as they will not be held any longer.
