MERi WETHER’S 3 CASES Are but a Sample of the High Handed Methods Employ ed by Leaders who see Political Ruin a Looming. The third party papers, speakers and even down to the rank and file, are continually harping on fair elections. The burden of their song, their shibboleth, is an hon est ballot and a fair count. Judge Hines with all the empha sis he could command roundly as serted he would not discuss the is sues of the canvass with Mr. Atkin son because the Democrats were not going to give him a fair elec tion. Every issue of |Tom Watson’s daily paper rings the charges upon assumed Democratic unfairness and ballot box stuffing in the state election of next week. If profession and demands for purity and freedom of the ballot box amount to anything, then one would presume the third party would frown upon, yea, scorn, even the least tendency to intimi dation and ballot box stuffing. Let’s see about this. Read the following facts that have occurred in Merriwether. Take No. 1. A colored man living in one of the districts in the southern part of the county told Hon. War ner Hill he wanted to vote for him, but the white leaders some tim e ago had inveigled him into an oath to vote the third party ticket and were threatening him with prose cution if he did not keep his oath. He was also threatened with per sonal violence if he .voted f»r a Democrat. Could intimidation go further than this? No. 2, at Harris City the day that Judge Hines spoke there and prated so much about Democratic methodsand intimidation, some third party men went to a colored man of influence whom they knew would vote for Hill and Sutton and told him, in angry and pro fane terms, that if he made a speech for Joe Terrell, Hill and Sutton his body would be riddled with bullets before he could get home and left as food for the buz zards. This was said in earshot of the voice of Hines, who was abus ing Democrats for intimidation. No. 3. A prominent third party man stated that if he could stuff the ballot box with a thousand third party tickets he would not hesitate a moment to do so! And this man is a shining third party light and deliberately makes the declaration of u willingness to stuff the ballot box with the mod est number of 1,000 votes. He won't have an opportunity, how ever, to do so. We leave the above facts to the thoughtful consideration of the people of Meriwether without fur ther comment. —Vindicator. Seven Persons Drowned Chaska, Minn., October 1— Sev u u persons were crowned here last evening. Louis Scariand fam ily. who had attended the fair started home at 7 oclock. Scarf was intoxicated and whip ped ins horree and furiously dastL ed down the river bank over the ferry and into tin river . His wife, five children and Miss Mary Roskus, Mrs, Scarf’s sister, were drowned as were the two horses . Scarf clung to the wagon box and was rescued The bodies of Mis Scarf and two children were recovered. Agents Wanted.—The German American Mutual Life Association, 33t Whitehall St .Atlanta,Ga.
