A Tapir.
A gentleman who owns a plan
tation in Nicaragua has promised
to get a tapir for the zoological
collection at Monroe park. Al
though common there the tapir is
comparatively rare here.
They stand about four feethigh,
have a thick skin and a flexible
snout, something on the order of
an elephant’s trunk, only not as
long in proportion.
■ hey bear captivity without
trouble and remain good natured.
The scientific definition of the ani
mal is almost as bigas it is. A
tapir is a specie of large add-toed
ungulateo belonging to Tapirio
and allied genera. The tapir found
in Central America is called the
Tapiris Americanus.

CORBETT Will FIGHT
He Wiil Make the match some
time Next WeeK.
New York,October 4.—The Eve.
uing 1 elegram this evening prints
the following. ‘‘.James J. Corbett
has changed his mind about fig t
ing Bob Fitzsimmons for • e
championship of the world He
has overcome his objection to
meeting a middleweight and 1- s
announced his intention of cover
lug k itzsimmons’s money now
held by the sporting editor of The
Herald and he will be in tbe city
to make the match one week from
tomorrow.
Corbett communicated this in
formation to :> pro.-nineiit sporting
man this afternoon who sui : ‘ or
belt will go into this match against
my judgement, 1 furnished part of
the stake money for his fight with
Sullivan, out 1 deplore his action
in meeting a middle-weight. It
will add nothing to his prestige if
he beats Fitzsimmons, and it is a
big chance. However he knows
best wba’. be wishes to do in this
matter. ”
Corbett’s action in receding from
the position he assumed Monday
is a great surprise to his friends
and enemies alike.
808 IS HAPPY’.
Derby, Conn., October 4. —Bob
Fitzsimmons received a telegram
from the New York Herald today
stating that Corbett had covered
the money at the Herald office.
Fitzsimmons was about as much
pleased at the news as a boy with
his first pair of pants. He said he
would meet Corbett at the Herald
office on October 11th to sign any
agreement and would do all he
could to force Corbett into sign
ing He says he is willing, to make
any reasonable sacrifice to bring
on the fight. He will fight in Feb
ruary or after Corbett's theatrical
season ends He prefers fighting
before the Olympic Club,, but will
fight anywhere for any sum and
under almost all conditions.
