A sensational scene occurred in the Circuit Court this afternoon. Judge Taylor had just overruled the motion for a new trial of Dr. L. C. Griffith, convicted of shoot ing Philip Lebrerer, when Samuel R. Hamill, his attorney, arose and denounced the ruling as a stab at the vitals of the law, done to please a few persons. Judge Taylor asked the lawyer if he meant his words as an affront to the Court, and Hamill said it couldfbe interpreted as the Court chose, and if the Court misunder stood his language he would repeat it, which he did. Then Hamill reduced his lan guage to writing and handed it to the Clerk of the Court. Judge Tay lor fined Hamill SSO and ordered him to jail for 24 hours. Later Hamill apologized and the sentence was remitted. TIN PLATE MILL To Start up on Full Time Next Week. Elwood, Ind. October s.—The American tin plate factory is mak ing arrangements to complete all repairs this week and in addition to this have the extra five mills started up with the rest of the plant next week. The Elwood window glass facto ry, the last in the city to resume, started up this morning with a full foice of 300 hands. Forty Convicts Hurt. Memphis, Tenn., October 4. —A disastrous wreck occurred on the Brushy Mountain Railroad, 10 miles from Harriman, Tenn., to day, in which several convict guards and convicts were injured, some of whom may die. The most seriously injilred are : D. C. Webster, Bon Air, Tenn., foreman; J. N. Blankall, Nash ville, guard; R. H. Burrows, Oli ver Springs, guard; John Thorn hill and Green Armstrong, con victs. Thirty-nine convicts, whose names are not known, were also injured. The accident was caused by a landslide at the end of a short curve. One of the convicts, who has about 20 years to serve, secur ed the injured guards gun and guardod the other nrisenors, keep ing them from escaping while the wreck was being cleared. Assault Alleged. Nashville. Tenn. Oct. 5. — Moses Straton, a prominent wholesa e merchant cf this city, was arrested on a charge of brutal assault pre ferred by Bessie Potts, who gives public exhibitions as a snake charmer. Mr. Stratton’s friends claim that it is a case of black mail. To Supervise the Sugar Product. Washington, Oct. 5.L-The argu ment on the application of the Miles Planting and Manufacturing Company for a writ to compel the treasury department to supervise and inspect its sugar product for the fiscal year ending June 30,1895 was heard today by Judgo McCo mas of the district supreme court.
