STRUNG UP, Released, Confesses to Burning the Town of Dalton Massilon, Ohio, October B.—At Dalton, a village north of Massil lon, an attempt was made last night to lynch a man named Wei mer The rope was adjusted and the fellow jerked off his feet, but cooler heads persuaded the mob to spare his life. At different times for the past four weeks Weimer’s house caught fire. The suspicions of the Dalton ites were aroused and a watch was kept. Saturday night Weimer was caught in the act of firing the dwelling. The news spread and an infuriated mob dragged the man from his home, fully intending to administer lynch law. Weimer confessed that his wife and daughter had tried to burn the house which was owned by Edward Houghton, proprietor of the Dal ton Pottery. Houghton had dis charged Weimer and the latter swore vengeance, Daltonites are positive that Weimer applied the match that burned the business portion of the village and rendered the 40 fam. dies homeless just a month ago. He all but confessed the crime last night. Weimer will be held for trial and if convicted for firing the town he will be lynched without delay. Considerable of Houghton s property was destroyed during the scourge. THE BARNUM SHOW Some old Tinies Ideas Have Been Improved Upon The Barnum & Bmly greatest show on earth will visit Rome < n next Tuesday. In the ch‘<racter of the exhibition, there has been con i-iderable of a change since last sea sen, it being the desire of the man agnment to remove as far as pos sible the opportunity of saying that the circus is the ‘‘same old t ling”. To begin with the specta c e, which has been a feature ot the Baruum & Bailey show for several seasons, has been dropped, aud i he circus programme has been proportionately lengthened. Sever al old time acts have jbeen revived notably the tournaments of the tumbling aud leaping. With this old feature which in accordance with the Barnum A Bailey scale of magnitude, is participated in by a arge company of acroba's the t ilk mg and ginging clowns have made 'heir reappearance. Os course pan totnine and acrobatic burlesques continue to monopolize the work the clowns as of old but the Shake •ipearea jester, tbe low comedy yunster abd the funny fellow who sings with the other clowns for laughing choru%again have place. The clowns are meutiooed only as showing on what a scale ever t ling ie doue with the Baruum & Bailey shows, for there are twenty of theth all. are sixteen bare hack riders and auy number of big circus acts. In the menagerie are Chik& and Johanna, the only p*»ir of giant gorillas living in captivi ty, who are bo groat a curiosity as to l e alone worth al! that is charg ed for admission to tue entire show.
