John Temple Graves says that he dun it. For pure unadulterated conceit and demagogery recomniei.d one John Temple Graves. Protection is a queer doctrine to be preaching to the Populists in the Western States. It is said that Victorien Sardou has on hand the plots of 250 pieces that he intends to write. And now old Sensational Haw thorn and little John Temple Graveshave organized a mutual admiration sassiety, The Kaiser says it’s a mistake ; h« didn’t say lie was going to France in 1900. He knows the limitations of his divine rghts. Buckley, the blind Democratic politician of San Francisco, who has had great ups and downs in the past, is in power there once more. A piece of flagging on Grasswell road, London, weighing 217 pounds, was lifted out of place by the growth of toadstools beneath it. A large pumpkin growing in a cornfield near St. Charles. Mo. was found by actual tapeline meas urement to increase its circumfer ence 3 3-4 inches in 24 hours. Field Marshal Sir Patrick Grant lias just celebrated his ninetieth birthday, He went to India on en tering the army in 1820, and saw almost all his active service there. A man regards his newspaper much as he does his wife—some thing to find fault with when he feels cross and something he nev er approves of it until it fails to come home. The Chief of police of St. Peters burg, General Wahl, publishes every morning the names of all who are found drunk on the streets The lists are very long and com prise men and women of all sta tions If Hill can turn the tide in New York he may save the House of Representatives to the Democrats. This is abundantly worth consid ering. The Senate in the next Con gress is likely to be as close as it ia now. Great Britan in war can turn cut 38 battle ships. This would ivo n stre-ng squadron rgainst our Atlantic Gulf and Pacific C with one Jeff at home for English defense. Against tl a force the United Sts. e* could rally six battle ships. _ 1 !■ New England is rejoicing over a historical discovery. While gra ding an old burying ground the workmen ploughed' up the head stone of Nathaniel Woodcock, who was killed in 1G65, and was the first white settler buried at Attle borough. Dr Jules Rocbard, tn the Uiin Medicale, draws a gloomy picture o the increase of the morphine habit in France and elsewhere. Ihe habit, he finds, becomes incurable at the end of six months of indulgence. Women and doctors are, in his opinion, mos; . deeply addicted to the druc. Not so long since a stowaway was found dead under the main hatch of one of the National Line of steamers. He had concealed himself before the steamer left Liverpool, and died of suffocation. Curiously enough, in his pocket was found a novel entitled Doo med on the Deep. ” Us* THE HUSTLER OF ROME, TUESDAY OCTOBER, 9 1894. THE ONLY EDITOR So far, Editor Craig of the Gainesville Eagle has been the on ly Georgia editor to decline against the appointment of Miss Ellen J. Dortch, to be Gov. Atkinson's pri vate secretary. Among other things Editor Craig said: ‘•The sanctums of the newspa pers and the desks of politicians are being d< luged with little per fumed circular letters announcing her platform.” Miss Dortch made this comment upon that remark: “\Ve have always heard that Mr. Craig was the ugliest man in Geor gia. We are now satisfied <n this point. Only a very ugly nn n c mid betray the confidence of our “lit tle perfumed notes.”—Columbus Ledger. A marriage that may be styled a record-breaker occurred near sycamore last Tuesday evening, The contracting parties were Mr. D. H. Mears and Miss Mollie Ar nold. There is not a paralied case in the memory of our oldest citi zens. It is well remembered that Mrs, Mary Mears, the deceased wife of the groom died only Sun day, 9th Inst , a notice of which appeared in the last week’s News, and nine days later her accustomed place in the Mears home, in Syra more. was filled by another whom Mr. Mears is pleased to call his wife —Sycamore News* Says the Philadelphia Record : President Cleveland and the friends of President Cleveland will with out doubt give a sturdy support to the regular Democratic state tick, et in New York. It is an insult to insinuate that they will be found encouraging or aiding the bolters. But no time should be lost in making such an unmistakable avowal in favor of Senator Hilf as would put an end to all questions of quibble. This avowal should come from the President himself. John Maddox will be re-elecfed, November 6, by a good round ma jority, for his record has been vir tually without a Haw, and he has done what he believed his consti tuents wanted him to do, and what his conscience directed him to do. Add to this honesty, his superior ability and hearty zeai. and what more could the people ask in a congressman? Nothing. And that’s why he will be elected by such a large majority next month. —Dal- ton Argus. The degree of Bachelor of Medi cine and of Master of Surgery have this year, for the first time in the history of the Scottish universities, been conferred on women. One of these young women, who ranked third in a class of fit members, stood first in her class of zoology, practi cal chemistry, anatomy, history physiology, surgery, medicine, pa thology and midwifery, In the Missouri village of Lock wood a Kansas divine preached in the morning on “I’ll Be Damn ed if I Do, and I’ll Be Dunned if I don’t,” and the evening on “Sev en Miles to Hell.” —Which would put him two aud a half miles back over the borders of the “bleeding grasshopper state.” Enoch Lockhard, who lives about a mile and a half north of Gallatin, Mo., is the boss water melon raiser. He has produced a melon that tipped the I earn at 87 poundsand measured 4 feet 2 inch es in circumference. A Western Bishop of the Epis copal Church says that the suc cess of the church’s missionary operations in the far West is large ly due to the munificence of Cor nelius Vanderbilt. Maddox, a clever rep resentative of the Barnum and Bailey show was m the office yes terday and gave some interesting facts concerning lhe biggest show on earth. Mr. Maddox has been in the show business a number ol years, but only went w ith the B. ifc B. this season. He was for six years un advertising man in Fore paugh’s—which by the way i owned by Mr. James A. Bailey, Speaking of Mr. Baiiey’s recent purchase of the entire interest of Mr. Barnum ‘is in gthe big show, Mr. Maddox said: “1 only know from heresay what Mr. Bailey paid for ihe show—ssoo, ooo. But I do know that when he pur chased a half interest from Mr. Barnum that he paid only $150,000 for it. But the show was loosing money then, aud of course, he got it at a rediculouely low figure, Mr. Bailey infused new life aud energy into it, aud it has been making big money since, and the property is worth considerably over sl,oou, 000, “The last time they were south the) lost $20,000. The season now in nothing to brag on, but we will come out ahead. SB,OOO to SIO,OOO is considered a good days business $5,000 or $6,000 med ium, aud be low tl ose figures the mai agement loose money.” “People that know anything about modern circuses, know that no other will begin to compare ‘with the Barnum and Bailey’s. We give you identically the same performances that we do tn all the large northern cities, and it cost only 50/.” Mr. Maddox showed me bills for teed for the stock and anima s and provision for the people, which he had engaged in Atlanta ana I find it foots up to $2,200. This aoes not include license, state aud county, newspaper adds, railroar transportation, salaries for 7(0 people aud numerous other expens es. So you see a big show has to take in lots of half dollars before they make anything clear. Earnum & Baileys will spread their canvass on the old show grounds on Second Avenue between the Rome Railroad aud the river. This is a wise move «s it is such a long way'out to North Rome that the night performance, anyway, would be a flat failure. Besides it benitits the merchants to have the show so near the business center, i he prospects are that a very large crowd will be here next Tuesday morning. A lady walked into Trevitt & Johnson's the other afternoon and it was noticalle that her hands and face were slightly chap ped. “Will you please tell me some thing good for chaps?” she enquir ed of Gus Johnson. ‘Spank ’em marm, replied Mr. Johnson, smiling. She looked al him hautily a me ment, aud then Gus thought of what a queer mistake he had made and begged her pardon. ALMOST A NEW YORK DAILY That Democratic wonder.
