The News and Courier says of her Little Mabel Paige, aged thir teen years, and her company achieved an unqualified success at Aoademy of Music last night, when a week’s engagement of comedy was opened with a charming com edy adapted from the German of “The Other Girl.” Os course Ma bel, who appears in the role of Evangeline, is the central figure of the play, but unlike many so called stars of maturer years, little Mabel does not take upon her shoulders the entire task of amus ing and entertaining the audience. She has an excellent support and the aggregation is composed of people who are able to contribute materially to the night’s enter tainment. Mabel herself is a veri tible infant phenomenon. Unlike most soubrettes, she is younger than she 1-oks. Last night she p aved the role of sixteen year-old girl with modern views and up to date habits, and played it to the life, introducing quite a number <<t song* and dan c-s including the tin de seicie handspring and split. I dont know to what extent the ' report has been circulated, but. from more than one source I have I had friends to come to me and ask if the Hustler of Rome is or is not I owned by a stock company. When I b ive assured the questioner that such is not the ease, 1 have had them say, “Well it is being report ed so through certain channels,” and they would then name the re ported stockholders. * * * In certain directions and in “those directions only” the im pression is to be created, and th e effect is to injure the paper with a “certain element” and cripple the papers business departmnnt. Now while I do not know who the “au thor” of this ‘rumor” is I do know that he is a “slick duck” and is playing a “stocked hand’’ on some very clever people. ♦ * • In behalf of the Hustler of Rome I want to say that the Hust ler of Rome daily and the Week ly Rome Courier began life under the present management and from that first day on dowm to the pres ent time they have never for an hour had any other owners than those who launched them. • * As to the scoundrel who “in vented" the rumor, I have this to say, he has woven a lie out of whole cloth and has knowingly and maliciously put it into circu lation. Not only that, he has so planted the seeds of false-hood that they ought to spring up and flourish on the quiet, and work ruin to my paper. Such a clever liar as he, may be honest —he may be but my can lid opinion is that he will steal. But then he is a cow ard too, and while he knows that this cap fits him, he will never stick his head into it. “Mark that prediction.“ To those certain few who have been given “pointers” “strictly on the quiet,” I have no word of censure—you heard the story —you have heard me name it and its myiterious author—if you hear it again kindly refer your informant to me. So much for that—but before I drop the subject I must thauk thi good people who have ever rallied to the support of the ‘’little” Hus tler oe Rome and through the fearful panic, stood by a papr-r that has always been oo t ie sidi > f the masses and for the right. If th»- paper is succeeding, it is doing so ifter having passed through the fires of adversity and the haunts of poverty. If it is succeeding it is because it has merited su cees at the hands of the Rome puplic— and the Rome public knows its business, ♦ * * From a little four page weekly, gotten out two pages at the time, with its entire outfit, composing room and sanctum all enjoying plenty of elbow latitude in a 15 x 20 ft. room, it has grown to an eight page daily and weekly and is ai home in its different appart meuts in four tunes the floor apace. * * It is a home paper ai d a welcom ed guest at the fireside of four fifth of the homes of this city, as to its staff—every body knows “me or John Re-se,” and they give us t.je ALMOST A NEW YORK DAILY That Democratic wonder.
