HARM ISON. THE COOK GANG. A Ne v and Daring Band of Outlaws in the Nation. Tahlequah, I. T., Oct. 15-The Cherokee Nation has produced many desppradoes its time. Some of them have been captured, aoum of them have died naturally, and some of them are still running »t 'arge. but the majority of them have met violent deaths at the hands of brave and resolut officers who valued their lives as little b did the outlawa. When Bob Dalton and several of his followers were killed at Cof feyville, a couple of years ago, the good people of this nation breathed somewhat easier and slept sounder for a time. But since the com mencement of the big Cherokee navment a new baud of outlaws have been urganiz id who have •wcorne as great a terrors here abouts as were old Tom Starr, or Bob Dalton in their palmiest daje of lawlessness. The Cook gang who robbed the Kansas and Arkansas Vai ey Rail road Station at Fort Gibson a few nights since, have us their leader Bill Cook, a youthful half-breed Cherokee, not more than 22 year J of age, and his followers, some 15 or 20 in number, comprise .almost every nationallity. Many of Bill’s subjects are old men, who have perhaps led lives! of outlawry from their youth up ! and who are versed in all the va ried phases of the highwayman’s I existence. Others of the gang are young like Bill; some are fugitives from the surrounding States who find temporary refuge from jus tice in company with the young desperado; while others are out laws from choice. Although a half-breed Cher >ke Indian, Bill Cook would pass in any country as a full-blooded white man. He is tall and hand some, witk sharp blue eyes and brown hair. He is a good rid*r, a dead emter shot and has an intel lect as sharp as a two-edged sword He rides fine horses, wears good clothes, a broad-brimmed hat two six-shooters and a long-bladed bewie knife and is never found without a good Winchester. The rendezvous of the Cook gang is iu the mountains north of Fort Gibson, and although they are badiv wanted by both the Cherokee and United States au thorities, so far none of the officers have cared to risk their lives in an attempt to hunt them down and arrest them. The Cock gang began their ca reer as outlaws about five mouths ago v hen they made an attempt to rob the Oiierokee treasurer of S2O, UUO while eu route from Tahlequah to Viu f a with the money for dis tribution . The treasurer was expecting something of the kino, however, and afbrja desperate battle, in which one of the treasurer’s guards was killed and Jim Cook wounded, the gang escaped and have been carrying on an indiscriminate robbing business ever since, during which time they have robbed the station at Fort Gibson twice, relieved private in dividuals of many hundred dollars and robbed the mail stage once be tween this city and Fort Gibson .J In the afternoon before tiny reached the Fort Gibson Station the gang went into a store of the Wn*a Nerve tSerri&s have done for others W W Will d< WiiSS for yMU MW IST DAY. . jl ViCiOR \ O F 15TH DAY. iVI E Easily, Quick!/ and Permanently Restc 'ed. 30TH DAV A positive cure for all Wei Nervcusiieet Debility. and all their train of evils reiuntn from early errors and later excesses; the ream us overwork, slckisrss. worry, etc Develop and Rives tone and atrenjet*■ to the <>■ grans. tttopM unnatural <*r niiartil eizilnnioan caus< d by yontb.Ail errare or es CO.ssive use oi tobacco, opium and Hqnoi which lead to conaumptioa and 1 he*r use shows immediate improvement. Theatore. keeper, knowing the desperate character of his fu4omer, said ‘ nothing and allowed the outlaw to go ahead with the goods, not be lieving he would ever get a cent for them. But m this he was mistaken. After the gang robbed the sta tion and divided up the swag the purchaser of the articles returned and paid for them, remarking to the proprietor that,he was “broKe” when he called in that evening, ; but had since made a raise and de sired to pay up his honest debts. Although the Cook gang is not yet as notorious as the Starrs, the ■ Daltons and the Doolens were, their future history bids fair to be as eventful and their record as bloody as any who have ever pro ceeded them. POWER IN A STORM. Greater Than All tne Horse Pow er Used in the World. A noted French scientist, H. Mohn, made a careful estimate of the energy expended in the pas sage of a notable West India cy clone, which lasted three days and nights, and the conclusion reached was that the force developed was fully equal to 473,000,000 horse power, or at least 15 times the pow er that is produced, in the same length of time, by all the wind mills, tnrbins, steam engines, and all the men and animals on the surface of the globe. “Whence comes this latent force?” he asks, and the answer is: “From the latent heat and vapor which arises in the center of the hurricane and is there condensed.” Applying this method of ccn - putatiou Io mid-continent cyclon ic movements with wl ci the peo ple of this region are fa ..iliar some most astounding results will be reached. Suppose, fur illustration a storm is developed of sufficient ex’ent and force to yield to the State of lowa an average of «ne inch of rainfa l. To produce this the area covered by the "low” in its movements across the valley must be from three to five times the extent of the areajif precipitation, tor it should be known to obtain even a moder ate amount of moisture you must milk a wide expanse .of sky. On the average the area of rainfall in this section of the continent does not sover one fifth of the territory cevered by the cyclones. AU parts of this ar-«a feel the effects of the passing storm, hut only a fraction thereof r ceives benefit J >f the rain fall. There is a vast sweep in the cir culation of winds employed in the work of wringing out a purely lo cal showers. And the sum total of energy employed in the production j of rainfall to the extent herein d - scribed would be more than equal to the motive power required to operate all the machinery of the woiid for an equal length of time Hea :ing Stoves- Cook Stoves Steel Ranges Fine Grates.
