The Boys Have With a Man Who
Wants a Wife.
Some time ago an advertisement
appeared in one of the local pa
pers signed Edwin Rock, Porters
ville, Ala., in which he said he
wanted a wife, giving a descrip
tion of himself and the property
he owned, and his accomplish
ments.
A young fellow in the city who
was acquainted with “Mr. Rock”
answered the “ad.” In a few days
the young man in question receiv
el a loving letter from the Porter
ville man.
Several letters were passed be
tween them, each containing any
amount of “taffy” and demon
strations of love.
“Mr. Rock ’ related his entire
history to the Chattai o >ga boy
and sent him a photograph of
himself. He received in return a
photograph of a very handsome
woman.
A number of other young men
were of course put on to the j"ke.
Letter after letter was received
from the deluded Alabamian,
sometira°B as many as three a
week. In his letter he explained
that he (wanted to comi to Chatta
nooga to see his luture bride,
“Clara Kdlion,” which cognomen
the boys used to deceive the igno
rant old “cuss,” and that he would
arrive here on the 20th instant.
He explained how he would be
dressed, stating that he would t'.jld
a white handkerchief in his left
hand. The letter concluded :
“Now, myjdarling Clara, I know
you will knew me when you see
me • ”
The boys thought they h’<d carried
the joke far enough, and yesterd y
wrote the man a letter explaining
the truth ot th* matter to him.
