Washington, October 16.—Sec retary Carlisle has referred to tl e attorney general the opinion ot Solicitor -Reeves that F loyd coi n ty can issue bonds to be used as currency. While Mr. Carlisle has expressed no decided*opinion, it is believed among treasury officials that the opinion of Solicitor Reeves will ba reversed by the attorney general. Treasury officials who are near to Mr. Carlisle say the decision is absurd, and whether or not it is revel s>d by the attorney general the treasury department will fight any issue of one, two, five and ten dollar bonds by a county to be used as currency. The opinion of Mr. Reeves has caused much criticism in the de parting t but until the attorney general renders a decision nothing degnite will be done. The hotels, boarding houses and restaurants did a fine bnsmess yesterday. All were taxed to their utmost to feed the hungry crowds that beseiged them The Arm strong register shows over a hun dred arrivals for yesterday. The Central has the names of 77 people sutograpLed Ou its register. Both hotels entertained their g iests pleasantly in spite of the big rush. Names of Japanese Ships. It is the custom of the Japanese to add to the names of their ships of war the word Kan, a term which Gos Chinese origin and means war vessel, and their war ships are al ways spek n of in this way, as Naniwa Kin, etc. In a similar manner the word Maru is added to the names of th’e merchant vessels, as Omi Mar’, Yamashiro Maru. The word is ot obscure brgin. It is believed to be a corruption of Maro, “archaic term of endearment.” The meaning and origin of Japanese war vessels are of interest. Matsushima is one of the Sankei, or “three views of Japan,” and has been famous from earliest times. Itis a beautiful archipelago on the coast, which can be described in the meaning of the words “Pine Tree Island.” Itsukushima and Hashidate are islands famous for their beauty. Naniwah is the ancient name for the province in which the old capi tal, Kyoto, is situated. Takachi ho is a southern moun tain, on the summit of which the first Mikado, Jimmu Tenno, is sup posed to have alighted when he de scended from heaven. Yoshino is a wild, mountainous tract of country, in which is situ ated a town of the same name, cel ebrated for its eakura (the flower ing cherry) trees, said to number 1,000.
