“I have never seen such a beau
tiful autumn in all my life,’’ re
marked Major Ayres, general man
ager of the Rome railroad, “and
1 have seldom seen such abundant
harvests as the people of Georgia
are reaping this fall. It has cer
tainly been a great year for the
farmer. Os course, the low price of
cotton will hurt the fellow who de
pended toe largely upon it, but
there has been a correspondingly
large crop of corn made, too. The
fields along the Rome railroad
which runs down the lovely fertile
valley of the Etowah, are fairly
white with the bursting bolls of
cotton and the farmers are in aw
ful straits trying to keep up with
the fleecy staple gathering it in be
fore the rains of winter come. The
cotton fields have outdone them
selves and many a planter in my
section will have more than he and
his force of hands can easily gath
er. It has been a wondrous crop
year and certainly has been the
prettiest autumn for the harvest
ing of the crops that I have ever
observed. ’ ’ —Constitution.
