Octoter. 80.—Sam ite S. Buxton, who on lant Satur iay, wns arrested, on theehargaof living murdered Mary A. Jones, a maiden lady, at her home a few miles from this city on the 21at. where sh* was found hanging by the neck, has confessed the murder. His preliminary hearing was held this morning soon after midnight, when he waivud examination. He was immediately removed to Sparta, fears being entertained that a mob might attempt to take him from the jail. The crime is one of a revoltii g nature. Three years ago Buxton, by a series of obscene letters, pui portingto have come from a witch and directed to Miss Jones, hypno tized her and caused her ruin. The intimacy was continued to the day of her death. By the same system of deceit the infatuated woman consented to be strung up by the neck in the belief that it would cause the death of Buxton ’• wife. The second time the experi ment was tried, Buxton pushed the chair on whieh the foolish woman stood from under her, ami ahe swung into eternity. Buxom took what money was in the house and left for his home, a short distance away, where ho was arrested at d brought to the city and lodged in jail. His motive for committing the crime is that he was tired of the woman. Buxton has a wife and three children. The murdered w man was a near neighbor of th* Bux tons and lived alone. As soon as court was called to day Buxton was brought in and pleaded guilty, and was immedi ately sentended to Wupon for life. Rescued From a Vile Haunt. Richmond, Va., October 29. Ala., Oct.29.—At York a shooting scrape took place this morning whieh resulted in the wounding -of- the - principals and the death of Marshal J. W. Thompson. It seems that S. A. Cameron, one of York’s most prominent business men, and E. F- Allison, an equally popular citi zen, had a disagreement about a settlement last Saturday and hail t not been for friends would have cohie to blows then. They were separated after culling each other harsh names. Allison this morn ing called on Cameron for an apol ogy, but Cameron had his pistol and did not apologize. A difficulty ensued and several parties, the marshal included, grabbed Came ron to take the pistol from him, and in the scuffle Allison was shot through the side and Marshal Thompson through the heart by the same ball. Camerori was con siderably bruised about the head, but nothing serious. Mr. Thomp son wan brie of York’s best citizens and hin death is truly a lamenta ble affair He leaven a wife and several children in tolerably fair circumstances. He was a Knight of Pythias and carried insurance. The preliminary trial will coma off tomorrow. A Card. .
