Hubert Alles and John Hoffman, each over GO years of age, have for years been employed at the insti uiion as aesislant janitors, and occupied, with four other old men, who are charity inmates, one of he large wards as a sleeping-room. Hoffman has complained to the sisters in charge that his rest was destroyed by the continuous loud snoreingof Alles and asked that it be stopped. Without their knowledge he se cured a revolver, and when awak ened this iworning by louder snor ing than usual, jumped out of bed in an insane rage, lighted the gas and fired at Alles, the bullet en tering the back of the neck and coming out under the right jaw. Realizing what he had done, and before the other men could prevent it he turned ihe revolver against his own head and fired. The bullet struck his skull and fractured it, and then, glancing off, lodged in the wall a few inches above the head of one of the inmates who was asleep in bed. AUes will recover, but Hoffman will undoubtedly die before a suc cessful operation can be performed on his skull. SEVEN LIVES LOST In the Flames of a New York Ten ement.
