THE HUSTLER OF ROME MONDAY NOVEMBER,S 1894.
THE BETROTHED
OF BILL COOK.
The Girl Who Will Reform the Out
law -If Ho lives.
Fort Smith, Ar’-., Nov. s—Far
up in the Cherokee hills, and nut
many miles from Sapulpa, where
the gang is supposed to be - hiding,
dwells the betrothed wife of the
most notorious outlaw the Terri
tory has ever known.
Her name has been Bent out al
ready, when the marriage license
was procured by Deputy Smith at
u kogee for the twain.
Litilt else was known < h run
t i, lately, lus;ejtor HousK and
others just down from there, have
talked enthuMatticaliy of her. She
is a very pratty girl of 18 sum
mere.
Bill Cook is something of a
striking young fallow, although he
was rather quiet until the outlaw
fever began to course in his veins
He wooed in a lovt-rlik* way,
and soon won her heart. Hi has
turned out bad since, but the girl
of his choice has (never wavered in
her affection for him. Her parents
jhwve tried to d'B»uade her from
i marrying tnni, <but the dangers
> now closing around his head Lave
I made her ciing to him only all the
I moro.
I But the pursuit has low cut her
off from seeing him aa the Mar
shals watch her like hawks, and
would like to use her as a decoy to
entrap the gay Bill.
She talas a great deal to the
Marshal, sometimes despondently,
and then again chaffingly. Now
she tells them that they are on a
wiid-gooie chase and wi’l never
catch Bill, and again she breaks
down when they talk of the price
they have set on her lover's head.
In her serious moments she ad
) mits to higher aspirations than be
ing simply an outlaw's wife, and
then she says that she will try to
reform her wayward boy. Once she
said, wearily, mid yet longingly r
“I would like to see the world. I
know nothing ot it except what I
have seen on these hills. I have
never been even to Fort Smith.”
The Marshal who heard her say
this brutally insinuated that per
haps that could be fixed all right
so that she could come to Fort
Smith. He meant that her lover’s
dead body would soon be at Fort
Smith and that she could go there
to claim it, but the heartless mean
ing never seemed to dawn .on her.
Martha Pittman’s parents are
nice people. The little Cherokee
blood flowing in her veins comesd
from her usothsr’s side. They have,
tio love for her i
and it was only with the greatest'
reluctance and for the sake of their '
only daughter that they gave their i
consent to the engagement. They
are said to hope that now the en
gagement will isever be consum

The old man is-a farmer, and
the daughter has always been on
farm, and has never left home,
and there the bright little beauty
will probably wear her life away,
mot-ruing the lover that will one
day, sooner or later, be brought to
her in a coffin, for the Marshal will |
shoot him on sight, as a fight i s
looked for whenever he is found.
Already they have tried the am.
bush scheme on him, and it failed,
but it will not fail always, and his
body is worth a thousand dollars
to the man who takes it into Tah
lequah or Fort Siuith. “Dead or
alive,” reads the reward.
