FOR WOMEN FOLKS
THE ONLY GIRL.
Young Saidso—You are the on
ly girl I ever loved.
Miss Herdso—Wait, now. Don't
move till I get my kodak.
Young Saidso—What on earth—
Miss Herdso—l’m getting up a
souvenir collection of photographs
of men who tell me that.
ETHEL’S ALTERNATIVE.
“Father,” she said in a voice ful
of tremulous reproach, “you have
allowed Hector to jpursue James
Gimpington clear to the outer
fence.”
“I have,” said the gentleman
grimly.
“And you have urged him to
nibble the attire of the young Hen
ry Gaggles.”
“No doubt of it,” and the reply
was accompanied by a heartless
smile.
“All these are only instances of
a long, long series of such events.
Am I to expect this treatment?”
“Certainly; until I have decided
upon your future husband.”
“Then,” she muttered, while a
gleam of triumph shot from her
eyes, “I know my course.”
“What, girl, will you do?”
“I will encourage the attentions
of the chief dog catcher.”
FASHION FANCIES.
Moire is one of the favored silks
of the season. The pompadour
moire scattered with indistinct
blossoms is very beautiful. Ft
evening gowns it is conbined with
elvet. n-flecting the color of the
flower. Broacade is also high iu fa
vor.
Nothing adds so much to the ef
fect <f a li«rht evening waist as an
artistic arrangement of jet Van
Dyke points. These pointe sell at
prices ranging from $1.60 to $lO
each. They may be charmingly used
as h yoke or arranged over the cor
sage so as to give the waist a slen
der effect. One Van Dyke point
makes a stylish epaulet for sleeves.
Pearl trimmingc are much used
this season. They are exquisite,
and very delicate, being mounted
on silk gauze instead of net. Pearl
fringe and duchesse lace are com
bined as a trimming for many
fashionable evening gowns.
Pervenche,- a light violet, is a
new shade much the vogue. Jac
queminot and Francais are two
other new colors, Lierre or ivy is
one of the latest greehs.
Magistrate—Now, prisoner at
the bar, I wish to know why you
hit your husband with the kitchen
poker, as you adinityou did? Pris
oner—Sure, yer Anner, I couldn t
find the broomstick as I use in
general, so I took the nearest thing
that come, —Half-Holiday.
See here, said the slang young
man to the girl of his choice for the
time, I’ve got a kick coming. Now
how did he guess it so well, mused
the old man as he bolted the front
door; I don’t think he heard me
sneaking up on him at all. —In-

An amusing incident happened
in one of the leading dry goods
houses the other day. A stylish
dressed young lady who had the
stamp of an “up-to-date” girl en
tered and in a very“ L-know-it-all”
manner, asked to see some gentle
mans shirts, “What number?”
politely inquired the merchant.
A look of blank dismay passed
over her face and she stood still
for a minute as if stunned, then
with a look that Edison might
have worn when he made his pho
nograph work for the first time,
said : “O! about 82,’’and the mer
chant went back toward the shirt
department softly whistling to him
self, “Two Little Girls in Blue.”
From unimpeachable authority,
ar English periodical, there comes
the information that in New York
there a re,one or two notions which
might be carried out successfully
by anxious hostesses elsewhere.
One of these is “the sheet and pil
lowcase party,” when each guest
disguises himself as a ghost, so
that his most intimate friends is
unable to recognize him. Maeks
are worn or not as desired. “Phan
tom parties” are more elaborate
affairs, the men getting themselves
up after the manner of the frater
nity who don long white robes
with a cord around the waist a su
gar-loaf hat and a covering for the
face with holes for the mouth and
eyes.
Here is a delicious luncheon or
•upper dish. It rejoices in the
name Alexandra Bonnes Bouches.
It is made as follows: Pound six
boned sardines, with a pice of but
ter, in a mortar; add a pinch of
curry powder, a tablespoonful of
grated Pai mesan cheess, and the
yolk of an egg; season with salt
and cayenne, and warm up in an
enamelled pan, then spread on
fried croutons—cut with a fancy
cutter—cover with hard-boiled yolk
of egg, which has been passed
through a sieve, and arrange some
capers in a circle in the middle of
each. Place in the oven for a min
ute or two before serving to get
thoroughly hot, and dish up on a
napkin garnished with parsley.
The Duchess of Sutherland is
given to good works in the east end
of London and she believes that
nowhere else are pretty clothes so
much appreciated. She always
wears her smartest frocks and hats'
and never forgets her diamond
rings and brooches. Her young
Grace declares the poor simply
love finery, and takeitquite amiss
if their visitors think their dowdi
er frocks are good enough for them.
An East End girl’s one ambition
is to know that the “toffs” in the
West End wear in the height of
fashion. In a week or two’s time
she will copy the toque she saw on
your head—after her fashion.
