have probably gained control of
the lower house of congress. Tue
I South, however, has stood stead
fast in its Democracy, losing hard

congress.
In New York the Republicans

A Fiendish Assault
Parkersburg, W.Va,, Nov. 7. —
Fred Sears, a negro, who belongs,
it is said, in Clarksburg, is in jail
for a crime the penalty for which
is death in this state. He went to
the bouse of Earnest Smith on
Socond street about 4 o’clock this
morning, having seen Smith ’eave
on a train, and obtained entrance
by telling Mrs. Smith he had a
message from her husband. The
fiend then assaulted the woman.
The struggle was heard by Mrs.
George Brown, who ran to the home
but was driven off by the negro
with a razor. Sears then fled, but
was caught this afternoon and
identified by Mrs. Smith and Mrs.
Brown.
