A sensational scene occurred in £
Justice Lambright’s court today’
when R. R. Hopkins, a prominent y
real estate agent, attempted to
shoot William McClure, a witness
en ths stand. Hopkins was inter
ested in the suit and McClure made
a statement which contradicted '
Hopkins previous testimony.
Hopkins took exception to it 1
and McClure resented in plain
language Hopkins sprang owards
McClure with an upraised stick f
and McClure dived into his pock- !
ets, uttering a threat.
Hopkins then pulled a gun and 1
i-pectators scattered, but a few
nervy ones grabbed the two] men
and serious trouble was avoided.
Judge Lambright notified both par
ties that he would present them to
the grand jury.

Minutes of last meeting were
read and confirmed.
In the appeal of W. L. Johnson
from the Recorders Court, the
opinion of the City Attorney wa B
read stating that uuder the facts
in thts case there was no attempt
to fax inter-State Commerce.
After hearing of the opinion of
the city Attorney, the Council
rendered its decision in the Appeal
of W. L. Johnson, and imposed a
fine of S2O and costs, the amount
charged by the Recorder.
Upon the petition of O. H. Me
tt illiams, the Clerk was instructed
to sunim on P. D. Roser before the
council at its next meeting to an"
swer the charge of Mr. McWilliams’
Petition of J. H. Hoskinson and
C. O. Stillwell as to the use of
Chert as a material for paving fjie
streets of Rome was referred to tlib
Street Committee for report.
The petition of G. J. Briant for
damage to his carriage was refer
red to the Ordin&ce Committee
with power to aet.
Ordered : That notice be publish

the road leading from said plant
to the corporate limits.
Resolved : That each member of
the council who signed a petition
to amend the School Act of Rome

their names from said petition:
Further resolved : That this coun
cil opposes any bill that interfears
with the present school system of
Rome. And the Clerk of the coun
cil is instructed to make a copy oi
these resolutions to each of the
members from this county of the
Georgia House of representatives.
The following Councilmen, to
wit: Wm. A. Wright, Walter Har
ns and D B. Hamilton, Jr. were
appointed as a Committee to con
fer with the railroads as to the lo
cation of a depot, and determin
ing the lines of the streets relative
there to.
The following resolution was
read once and continued under the
rules, to-wit:
“Resolved: That Section 647 of
(he City Code in reference to Pow
der Magazine, be and the same is
hereby repealed.
Report of the Secton for the
month of October was read and ac
cepted. Showing eight interments
in Myrtle Hill Cemetery for that
month, to-wit: Five whites and 3
colored: Os these one white was a
non-resident, and two colored pau
pers.
The finanieial statement of the
’ Clerk was read and the following
accounts were passed and ordered
paid.

Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 12. —

Notwithstanding the fact that the
face of the returns is against him,
Governor Turney is still confident
and today declared that he did not
•el eve be was defeated. “I shall
w*it,” he said, “until the official
teturns are canvassed and the vote
investigated w herever there is any
unfairness charged. I believe the
official returns will elect me.”
Secretary of State, Morgan, to
day announced his intention to
withhold the official returns from
the public until every county has
been heard from. This will pre
vent any county holding back re
turns and doctoring them. When
all the counties have been heard
froni he will call by wire Attorney
General Picket and canvass the re
turns.
Chairman CarroU today said
there had not been and would not
be the slightest irregularity coun
tenanced. He would not be for a
moment connected with anything
savoring of fraud.
“It,” said he, “we were willing
o steal ballots, could not under
uiy eircumstances afford it. Ou
he other hand, the republicans
roust be as clean aa we are. The
correct vote of each county must
come to the capital. Then the can
iiaatee who ba« the highest vote
must be seated.”

county.in the state give Evans,
.republican nominee for governor,
a plurality of 1,654. The figures
.are carefully compiled and the of
ficial count will not materially
change them. #

Nev Oreana, La., Nov. 13.
The Texas and Pecific railroad’s
big cotton wharf,on the oth-r aid*-
of the river, caught fire in aom*
mysterious manor at 6 o’clock
this evening. The entire wharf. 800
feet long, whs destroyed and will
it between 25 000 o' 26 000 bales
of cotton. Forty or fifty care load
«d with cotton were also consumed
making about 28.000 balon loss in
all. The grain elevator had a nar
row escape, and was only slight!
damaged The loss will exceed
half million dollars
SHERIFF OVERPOWERED.
His Pistol Taken From Him-A
Good Way to Collect Debts.
Bernettsville, S. C., Nov. 13.
Last evening Deputy Sheriff John
son attempted to arrest a desper
ate negro about four miles from
town. Johnson was overpowered,
mocked senseless and his pistol
was wrenched from his hands. The
desperado then shot at the pros
trate deputy twice. Fortunately
neither of the shots took effect.
The negro escaped to North Caro
( hna.
This morning while Mr - Charles
Crosland waa on his way to town
h» was held up by a man named
Richardson, and was requested to
pay 40 cents, which Riohandson
claimed that Crosland owed him.
Crosland liquidated the claim tint
Richardson is in jail.
