TEMPERANCE COLUMN Edited by One of the Ladies oZ the Rome W. C. T. U., and Devoted to the Christian Temperance Cause in This City. A heartfelt stnile, a gentie tone, A thoughtful word, a tender touch, A passiag act of kindnee.s done, ’Tis all, but it is much These are not things to win applanse; No earthly fame availeth such; But surely by ihe heavenly laws They are accounted much. —Anon. CURKD BY KINDNEB?. It is hteially true that a single word, or movement of the body, mav change the destiny of nations. Au exchange fells of the affect of a tew kind words on Jim: We will call him Tim, for I do not iemember his name, He had lost all resnectibility, and was a common gutter drunkard. His family Lad dis ownod him, and would not recognize him when they met him. Occasional ly lie would get a job at the stable where D’, Davis kept his horses. One mon i ig the doctor laid his hano on his shoulder and said' “Jim, I wish you would give up the drink.” There was something very like a quiver of the man’s lips as he an swered : “If I thought you cared, I would, but there is a great gulf between you and me.” “Have I made any gu'f, Jim? Think a moment before you an swer . ’ ’ “No—you—haven't.” “If you had been a millionaire, could I have treated you more li’ « a gentleman?” “No, you couldn’t.” “I do care, Jim.” “Say it again, wontyou?” There were tears in the man’s eyes now. “I do care, Jim.” with a tender little emphasis on the Jim. “Dector Davis, I’ll never touch another drop of liquor as long as I live. Here’s my hand on it.” This was fifteen years ago, and ••Jim” is to-day a respectable and respected man, and an earnest Christian. Saved by a kind word. There are lost pieces of silver, ay, of gold, which have long been miss ing from the Father’s treasury; lives crowded so full of suffering that, though they are God’s chil dren, they themselves do not dream it. But if you can find them, and wash them with your tears, and burnish them to brightness and beauty by your patient, lov ing touch, you will find on them the image of Him who made them, and the superscription of His im mortal children. Light the candle • of your love, then, and sweep dili gently till you find them.—Bishop Potter. HEREDITY AND DRINK. Far worse than the effect of s.roiig drink upon the man him self is its effect Qpon his posterity. A writer gives a stiking illustra tion of this. He says: A specialist in children’s diseases who has for twelve years been care fully noticing the difference be tween twelve families of drinkers and twelve families of temperate ones, reports that he found the twelve families produced in those years fifty seven children and the temperates sixty one. Os the drinkers, twenty-five children died in the first week of life, as against six on the other side. Among the children of the drinkers w'ere five who were idiots; five, so stunted in grow th as to be really dwarfs five, when older, became epileptics; one a boy, had grave chorea, ending in idiocy; five muielwere diseased and deformed, and two of the epileptics became by inheritance drinkers. Ten only of the fifty-seven were normal in body and mind. On tho part of the sixty-one of the terr.- ! pirates two only showed inherited nervous weakness, while four iu later vears of childhood has curable nervous diseasas, and fifty were in | every way sound in mind and body, i There could scarcly b * a mor-' con- { elusive demonstation m favo rof abs liiienc" from intox'canta on the part of others who ass-urn'e the re spon-ibility ot nanmtage. We must watch and pray, at al t times, and iu every place, tor no part is secvie against the attacks of our ma ignant enemy, who sleeps not nor rests from bis temp atiom . li is tor this reaso i that our, Lord Jesus Christ, who ki ew the malice of the evil one, and the efficacy of prayer; the strength o f lhe enemy, and the weakness of man admonishes, in the most oarnest manner, his disciples, and all ihe taiihlul, to watch and piay, if wh w< uld not be overcome by ini emmiee; that is, our vices.
