THE COOKS DOOMED-
Muscogee, I. T., Nov 20. —V.’ur
with the cooksis going on in the
vicinity of Verdigras River, about
20 miles from here. The bandits
are massed in force there and
have more than their match in a
squad of Cherokees, who have
been roiindlng them up for several
days-
No open battle has yet taken
place, l*ut there lias been a great
de*iof skirmish fighting, and
both sides are preparing for a
death struggle. Fully 15 of the
Cook gang are together, and Bill
Cook is leading them in person.
Hu young wife, or sweetheart, is
with him at the rendezvous.
The Cherokee would have f' reed
the fighting le"o e now were it
not for the fear of running short
of ammunition before the battle
was over. If it comes to a question
of allowing the Cooks to slip away
from them, or fighting as best they
can, then the Cherokee will light;
and they are not afraid of getting
the worst of it. -It was thought,
however, to be good generalship to
keep the Cooks in the corner
now have them in until all is m
readiness for a prolonged attack.
The Cherokees consequently dis
patched Sheriff John Brown to
this city for a full supply of am
munition and he arrived here to
night bringing the information al
ready given. The Sheriff will leave
here in the morning with all th*
supplies needed and a str ng guard.

A horrible assault was committe I

of a well-known farmer, today, and
the assailants will probably be
