POISONED
Two Families Near Calhoun Made
Seriously ill.
RATHER MYSTERIOUS
First Supposed to have been
Caused by Eating Fresh
Pork; but it Is thought
Poisoned by an Ene
my.
Calhoun, Ga.. Nov 29 —A very
seneational and mysterious po.Hon
ing occurred at the home of Mr. |
Bud Turner two miles vast of Cal
houn this afternoon, where Mr.
Turner end family and the family
of Mr. Burgeae, a tenant of Tur- '
ner’a living on the same farm Sev- ’
eral member* of both families eud- I
denly became viclwntly ill. The
pb) Bic.au found thirteen patients
when he reaened the Turner and
Bupgeae home. Some of them were
apparently in a, dying cenditioae
and al) were very sick. All had '■
evidently been poisoned in eom
way.
It was at first supposed thatthey
were made sick by iresb hog meat,
eaten yesterday and today, but a-e
the symptoms indicated arsenical
poisoning, it is thought probable
that some enemy of Mr. Turner’s
had pot arsenic in the well. How
ever this is only a supposition and
the real cause of the poisoning is
only .a mystery. The patients are
all somewhat better tonight and
will perhaps recover. It is im
possible to learn the particulars in
detail tonight, but tomorrow will
probably develop new and sensa
tional feature .

FIRE ALARM

A FINE RUN BY NO. I.
No. 1 Went down the Street
Like a Rocket. No. 2. Hao
pens to a bad Acci
dent. Smashed into
a telegraph pole
This afternoon at 1:20 o’clock a
fire alarm was turned in from the
Second ward.
No 1. was outef her stables in a
flash, and made a beautiful run
down Second avenue. They had
passed Fourth avenue, before No.
2 had turned the corner into Broad
Ab Ne. 2. started to turn the cor
ner into Sscond avenue, the dri
ver, Bud Taylor, saw that he could
not make it, and would drive full
against Vandiver’s saloon
With great presence of mind he
guided his rushing teain so that a
horse would be on either side of
the telegraph pole which stands on
the corner.
Those in the wagon braced them
selves for the shock, and for a won
der neither the horses or men were
injured. But the fifth-wheel
and wagon pole were smashed It
was a close call and required a
steady nerve and a clear head to
go through the ordeal.
The fire was in a bale of cotton
in a hox car that stood on the sid
ing by the Howell cotton compa
ny’s warehouse It was extinguish
ed without trouble. It is supposed
to have originated from a spark of
a cigar or cigarette of some pas
serby.
JOSHUA SIMPKINS.
And a Superb Sand and Archestra
With Street Parade on Dec 3rd.
Reno & Ford’s “Joshua Sim'p
kins” Company, carrying their
own special scenery, will produce
the great rural comedy drama of
that name, at Nevin Opera House
Mondav Dec. 3rd.
Th* s piece deals with country life
and people, three acts of the play
being laid in one of the many
quaint villages of Vermont. The
second act (in 3 scenes) portrays
Uncle Josh’s first visit to Wash
ington City. In the third act a
sensational sawmill effect is shown
being nothing more nor less than a
complete saw mill in full opera
tion. cutting up genuine timber.
The saw used is a genuine Buzz or
Circu'ar Saw and cuts through tim
ber at lightning speed. Box sheet
at Yeiser’s. Prices sl. 75, 25
Now Then Joshua.!
Seney, Ga. I( JJov., 30., 1894. —I
see in the columns of Tuesday’s
Hustler of Rome, apiece headed
“Howell Happenings,’’ in which
my name appears with a handle to
each end of it. I would like you to
allow me space enough in your pa
per to reply to part of my. friend
Josh’s writing: Dear Joelj: I am
somewhat surprised at you for ex
posing me for being a bachelor,
but then I guess as it is only too
true to make a joke of, I might as
well say just here that it is not a
matter of choice, but necessity
Then with the “Rev.’’erased from
my name, I have no more to say
to Josh.
The hard times, five cent cotton,
and a large crop of soghrum, have
put the people of our section to
planting more hoe-cake seed than
thev have for many years. Good
times coming I guess. Long live
both Phillip and This Hustler of
Rome, and our neighbor “Josh.”

How the cat Falls.
A select company of the savants
of Paris ha» been endeavoring to
determine why it is that when a
cat has to execute a fall it invaria
bly falls upon its feet. To this end
the society has subjected a subject
to a series of falls from a height
of some eight and forty inches.
The drops have been made as awk
ward for the animal as soience
knew how, but the result has al
ways been the same. In the course
of it brief descent Grimalkin has
always contrived a means to land
neatly on alfours, with its tail ta
a triumphant right angle.
How does it do it? The cat’s de
termination to keep its secret, has
baffled the closest inquiry. No less
titan sixty, instantaneous photo
graphs have been taksn of as many
phases of the chute. At a conveni
ent distance distance from the
finish, the cat is seen revolving in
itself, without any visible assisting
force, and stopping in its revolu
tion when it has got right side up
permost.
And all science can do is to abuse
the cat for violating the laws of
nature. The explanation of the
phenomenon would seem to be that
pussy knows better how to fall
than the laws nature could tea< h
the scientist. —Pall Mall Gazette.
