And I’ll tell yon • hat these big canavansaires’ menu grows longer and harder to de ts.pher with each succeeding year. . Did you ever notice how foolish a ( jellow will look when he picks up a long bill of fare, and most of tle dishes are set forth in French terms? He ll glance up and down it, and his face will pucker in an : awful frown. Then he will make a half-hearted effort to order, and 1 get hopelessly tangled up. Finally he 11 end the business by telling the waiter to bring what he d —n pleases. Os course he does not get any thing he wants, and will sulk for the rest of the day and swear at hotels and menus in general. I know because I have been there.” Two old and bewhiskered farmers from some where in Alabama, came into the city a few days since with cotton. They were honest looking o‘d fellows, but. it was painfully eV d'Hit that they were unused to c i vwavs. One of them was driv ing a healthy strong ox, and wh«n he struck lower B r oad street ‘here whs a perfect jam of waging. He made r all right until an electric car came whizzing along. Then that steer evidenced the fact that he objected to any such object ska medown on him. He inglori ously wheeled around, and started back towards Alabama, at a 3:40 gait Its a thousand wonders he didn’t smash into some but he SUCCeHPR fully evaded them, and was only stopped by jamming his head into the high wall on low er Br< ad street. The farmer said later“be be damned if th«ol’ ’lec tricities warot jist orful-” The Christmas magazines are all cooling in now, and most of them are exceedingly rich in read ing matbr. All, too, are models of typographical beauty, and are going like hot cukes. The beat are Harpers, Scribners McClures, Home and country and from across the deep Pail Mall and the Idler. The weekly illustrated paper will be out soon, and of course will be large and handsome Only twenty-four days until Christmaasis here . What hopes and joys, fears and sorrow come with Jaii? day. In the 'ush of t'e Christ mas eve great pages of history are written. In the home of rich all is joy and expectancy; in that of the poor, the pale anxous face of a mother is seen bending over her little one, to whorne the morrow’ will bring no cheer. The thought less and heedks?, will turn the day; consecrated to the memory of the Saviour, into wild debauchery. But; enough of moralizing. Let’s all; 1 >ok forward to the unknown fu ture and tru-t to Him for what it 1 brings. Pro. W.* L. Dudley, President of the Vanderbilt University Glee, Banjo, Mandoline and Guitar Club, writes that they will be in Rome Christmas week. This orgaization is composed of young men from the University, and it is said that their performance equal that of any professional Company. They are a refined, intelligent and handsome lot of young fellows and insure a clean and pleasant entertainment. They have recieved the highest praises of the press everywhere they go. Before me lays a sueet with criticisms of their work from Louis ville, Nashville, Chattanooga and Outer places, and all are unanimous in lauding the Glee Club. They will be greeted in Rome by a large and fashionable audience. I had the p'easu e of look ing through t e rew Pansy Chape', just in front of the Cotton Mill Friday afternoon. It is not finished yet, but the basement has been fixed up to enab’e Sunday School to meet there üb : s n < niog at 9:30. The upstairs w : P be real ly a handsome place of wc’sh.t wh§n completed. The terier is almost Octagon shaped, and is we 1 1 ventilated, and has pretty stained wind ws. The two diamond shaped windows just in 11 e tear of the al tir are the gift of the Shorter Col lege Teachers. In the center of the glass r.rn painted clusters of pan sies. Now 1 know he would not per mit such a thing did he realize that I was going to say anything about it, hut I wish in all justice, 16 print the fact that Mr. J. A. George has been the prime mover in this good work. He is not a rich man by any means, indeed works very hard for his livn;, but 11 venture the assertion that no man in Rome does more’practical chari ty than he. He is constantly going among the poor people in the fac tory district, and unostentatiously relieves the suiiering and needy. No one will ever know just how much good he accomplishes, for he avoids all publicity in such matters. But I am in a position to know of many of his deeds, and speak only from facts. All honor to this plain, practical Christian gentleman. It was through his es forts that Pansy Chapel was re modeled and fixed up so neatly. The Southern Hotel, in Chat tanooga, under the proficient management of Mr. W. A Camp, is now considere one of the best in the South. He has refitted and refurnished it, and made it a hotel second to none. The table service is most excellent, and the servants careful and attentive.
