“The appointment of Professor
Pollock as state school commis
sioner pleases me very much,”
said Mr. Calder Willingham to me
yesterday. “It is a good selection
and is not only a high and well
deserved compliment to a very
bright young man, but it is at the 1
same time a great compliment to .
Mercer. Professor Pollock is well (
equipped for the position, and I (
am glad Governor Atkinson select- |
ed him.” Mr. Willingham further
told me that a meeting of the pru
dential committee of Mercer Uni-
versify was called for tomorrow
night, when the matter of the ap
pointment and the action of Prof.
Pollock will be discussed. The
meeting cf the committee is called
by request of Professor Pollock.—

HELPED BY COMPETITION
In view of the concerted attempt
of the envious competitors to in
jure the business of the company
who are circulating the Eucyclopte
dia Bi itanuica in Georgia, by mak
ing it appear that the work was
tilled with slanders on the South,
in the recent report of a reputable
and representative committee from
the Confederate Veterans’ Associa
tion must he accepted as a great
victory for thej managers of The
Atlanta Constitution’s Encyclopm
dia Department.
The committee, composed of
such men as Col. W. L. Calhoun
and others, whose loyalty cannot
be questioned, after a full investi
gation into the charges made, re
ported that the same were without
foundation, and gave their endorse
ment to the work as being a repre
sentative reference publication.
There are editions of the Britan
nica that are very prejudicial to
the South, and for this the
Commercial refused, at first, to in
dorse the work that is now being
advertised in this State.
But in view of the many strong
indorsements of this edition, from
the best people of the South, we
see no reason now why it should
not have been endorsed by us as it
was by other papers, and without
doing the slightest injustice to our
readers.—Atlanta Commercial.
