THE HUSTLER OF ROME TUESDAY D ECEMBER 4 1894,
CALLED ‘ APPOMATTOX.’’
Surrender'' was Objectionable
and the Name was Changed.
Washington, December 4, —An
order was issued at the postoffice
department this afternoon chang
ing the name of the postoffice here
tofore called “Nebraska,” which
town is now the county seat of Ap
pomattox county, Virginia, to
‘‘Appomattox. ’
Some weeks ago a great stir was
created.over the action of postoffice
officials in changing Jthe name .of
the old postoffice at Appomattox
Courthouse, three miles from Ne
braska, to “Surrender.”
As this was the historical place
where General Lee capitulated to
General Grant, objection was made
to the new name because of its
suggestiveness. The reason for the
change was this: Some time ago
the old Appomattox courthouse
was built at the town of Nebraska,
in Appomattox county, which be
came the county seat.
It is the custom in Virginia to
have a county seat called by the
ame name as the county, aud the
postoffice department, not desiring
to Lave two “ Appomattox” po.-t
--officis, changed the name of the old
our tbouse postoffice to ‘Surren
der.”
The name“ Appomattox’could
io’ be applie 1 to the new postoffice
a v Nebraska,. intil new postmaster
was commissioned for the place, and
his was done a few days ago,| so
according to present indications, the
o toffice wl ere Lee surrendered
is to continue to be called Surrender
and the new postoffice at Nebraska
is io Le called after the name of the
county—“ Appomattox. ”
BIG CAS WELL.
Struck in the Indiana Belt, and
she’s a Terror.
Anderson, Ind , Dec 4. —Anoth-
er big gas well, one of the largest
overdrilled in the natural gas belt,
was brought in to-day north of the
city. It has an out-put of 10,000,
000 cubic feet daily. It came in
with a roar that could be heard
two or three miles. Notwithstand
ing caution it was found extreme
ly difficult to bring it under con
trol. It is just as good a well as
was ever drilled in Indiana even
in the first year of natural gas.
This is a dsadener to the gross
prophesies of State Gas Inspector
Jordan, that natural gas would
play out before bis recent report
w’as due.

Fired by the Students, and now
There is Trouble.
Lexington, Kv. Dec. 4—As the
result <jf the scolding given several
students at the State College nn
Friday last by Captain Sam Swig
ert, the military director, au at
tempt was made early the following
morning to blow up his cottage.
Thursday night a number of the
boys stole a cannon from the ar
mory and proceeded to celebrate
Thanksgiving Day and the defeat
of the Central University football
team by discharging it.
At this Captain Hwigert was
riled and calling the suspects be
fore him gave them warning that
if the occurrence was repeated the
perpetrators ( would be diesmiss
ed from college
The boys held a consultation and
decided to get even with the Cap
tain. Accordingly two bombs were
made of clay aud heavy paper,
stoutly tied with wire and twine.
One of these was exploded against
the Captain’s cottage at midnight,
but without effect. The other was
thrown against the east side some
four hours later, causing the win
dows to be shacit r id aud demolish
ing the framework.
Several names have been secur
ed by the Captain, and an investi
gation which is likely to result se
riously to the students will take
place tomorrow morning The boys,
however, deny any criminal intent
and say they merely intended the
bombardment as a joke.
