WILD BILL IN JAIL
He Resisted Arrest but Emally had
to Surrender.
Thomasville, Ga., Dec. 18. —
“Wild Bill,” th* negro desperado
who has been terrorizing several
South Georgia counties for weeks
was captured here this morning by
Sheriff Doss, and Marshal Spair.
He was located in the house of a
negro woman last night, but the
officer preferred to wait until day
light to take him. The house was
watched all night and at an early
hour this morning they called up
on him to surrender. Seizing his
winchester, he defied the officers
to take him. After several shots
had been exchanged, Wild Bill
gave up and was sent to jail. No
body was ,hit by the shots fired.
The desperado will be sent to Val
dosta. where he is badly wanted by
the authorities for numerous
crimes.

PRAYING FOR INGERSOLL.
Preachers in Richmond Keep The
Crowd Away From His Lecture.
Richmond, Va. Dec. 18.+—Th*
audienc that heard Colonwl Robert
Ingersoll’s sensational lectur*,
“What Must We Do to Be Saved?”
at the Richmond theater tonight
was much smaller than it would
hive been but for the eranest ap
peals that several local niinistßrs
made to their congregtions not to
g » ajid hear the great agnostic. A
half dozen pastors alluded to th*
lecture yesterday in terms of th*
strongest condemnation*
Thisaften»oon the clericus, which
embraces all the Episcopal clergy
of the city, had quite an animated
discussion over the infidel and his
views.. It being too late for any
action to prove effective none
was taken, but Col. John Murphy,
the owner of the theatre, and Man
ager Thomas G. Loathe, were cen
sured; by th* preachers for allow
ing the anti-Christian lecture to
be delivered in that house.
It was proposed to offsr prayer
for Ingersoll, as was done when
he was here last year, but one of
the prominent members of th*
clericus thought the jaa'c s woul I
be in prayerful mood when they
had got home and the joint invoca
tion was not offered. One of th*
ministers cited a case in a town in
Canada in which Ingersoll was
billed to speak and the Christian
people of the city entered Buch a
strong protest against it that the
mayor of th* place forbade him to
speak there. A movement was
quietly put ou foot here to day to
try and prevent the delivery of
the lecture, but it was found t) be
futile and it was abandoned.
QUITE STORMY
The Cigarett Trust Has the Hoo
siers by the Throat.
Indianapolis, Ind., December
18.—Ths Attorney General of the
New Jersey appointed Judge Brown
of this city, as Oommissioner to
take the deposition of John Rauh,
a local tobaccoist, who has attemp
ted to buck against the American
Tobaco Company,otherwise known
as the cigarette trust.
Mr. Rauh complained that th*
trust has instituted a boycott
against him, and had notified lo
cal jobbers that if they sold to
him they would be barred from
further purchase of supplies. The
jobbers were therefore compelled
to close down o« Rauh, inasmuch
as the trust controls 95 per cent of
the output of the country, and is
in a position to enforce its de
mands.
Last evening Mr. Rauh submit
ted his testimony, the Commis
sion sitting in private chambers.
Th* session is reported as having
been quite stormy, owing to the
fooling shown by the rival attor
neys.
It is said that while Georga Tur
ner, owner of the New York, Re
corder, was here ostensibly to call
upon Harrison, yet his real mission
was to see that too much publicity
was*not given to Mr. Rauh’s com
plaint which was more or less
corroborated by Mr. George Weiu
goter. If this was Mr. Turner’s
principal mission he was success
ful. so far as this city is concern
