Turnley, has won a verdict in his suit a gainst the Souther® Mutual Fire Insurance Co. The ,case after be ing on trial in the City Court Jfor several days was finnished yester day and a verdict returned by the jury this morning. • « « It will be remembered that in the disastrous fire which destroyed Dr. J. B. S. Holme’s Sanitarium, a couple of year ago, that the Turn ley residence, which was the prop erty of Mrs. Turnley and Mrs.JW. H. Edmondson, was ignited from the Sanitarium fire and was burn ed to the ground. • • • The building at that time .had been insured with the Southern Mutual Fire Insurance Co. for twenty two years, fpr $2,000. And those twenty two years the Insur ance people had been pocketing the premiums and receipting for the same. • • • But when the fire had passed and the fine old two story resi dence, which had for years crown ed one of Rome’s hills, had been left ia ashes then it was that the loss was asked for and then it was that the spirit of the dream of the insurance people was changed. And forthwith those dear polite Insur ance people raised a kick abont the market value of the ‘‘old build ing” and—offered a compromise of about |I,BOO. Natural, wasn’t it? Finally the homeless policy holders employed Messrs. Reece 4c I Denny and after fighting every inch of the ground against such able and learned lawyers as Dean 1 & Dean, the Jury in Judge Harris’ court, brought in a verdict giving the policy holders a verdict for sl,- 500, with 10 per cent damages making $1,650, and $87,40 for in terest, making a total of $1,734.40 Then 10 per cent attorney’s faes making $178,74 and all the costs of the case which will make over $2,000. Now it strikes me that the Insu rance people got off light—even if it did cost them two er three hun dred dollars more than the face of the policy. What reasonable ex cuse can they offer for not paying it after they had taken the pre miums on it for twenty-two years? Surely the Southern Mutual won’t plead in this case that the property was over insured in order to burn out to the insurance com pany. • e Suppose the Insurance Co. re funds to the policy holder the pre miums on ssso with interest for the twenty-two years. Why not? Wouldn’t it be honest? Mayor Sam Maddox, of Dalton, epent last night in Rome and this morning Colonel I. E. Shumate, oue of his clever fellow citizens came down. These twe whole-soul ed gentleman have a host of friends in the Hill City who are always glad to shake them by the hand. Yesterday’s registration was un usually heavy, but ns it was the last day and times have been a lit tle hard, why it was nothing more than could have been expected. So far as county politics is concerned, there seems to be but one fight, and that is for the office of Tax Reciever. Deputy McConnell will succeed Sheeiff Jake Moor, beyond peradventure and will do so with a big najority, “Mark that predic tion” And still they come. To date Seventy seats have been subscri bed. at $1 per seat, for Pansy C ba pie. This is a good showing for the four days since the coupons made their appearance. As I said iu the outset, the money for the three hundred scats for the pretty little Gothic Chapel will be subescribed by Christmas day—-I say it again and again emphasize it by saying, “mark that prediction.” Do you want a seat in Pansy Chaple? Then waste no time but do like the following good people, clip a coupon and send it and yaur dollar to Mr Junius George: Set how ths rail is growing: Thoss who have helped: M . A.
