Selma, Ala., December 20. — Last night at 9 o’cock “Mayor Stewart was served with a notice of suit against the city by the wa terworks company. This was after the conference between Captain Harabon and the committee ap pointed by the council. This committee offered a com promise of $4,500 for the $6,500 or s7,ooonow due This was declined and suit was instituted for the $3,- 000 note given some time ago. Sev eral of the city officials expressed the idea that they were glad that the suit had been instituted. It is mow probable that the city will annul its contract with the water company on the ground that the latter has not complied and cannot comply with, the contract. SMUGGLED OPIUM, Tacoma, Wash., December 20 For several years large quanities of smuggled opium have been sent throagh Tocoma by express bear ing “sweated” stamps. Within 30 days custom inspector B. F. Jossey has confiscated 80 pounds of opium geing through by express, the cane bearing ‘Swaated” stamps. Ah Hing, of Fort Townsend, was ar rested and acknoledj.ed making the shipment. He was held for trial, the officials expect to break up the traffic. Yesterday morning at the home of the bride in Livinston district. Rev. W. M. Bridges joined for ife in the holy bonds of Wedlock, Robt. E. Caldwell and Mus Mat lie Hudson, both prominent citi zens of that section of ths county.
