RACE WAR
Negro Lawlessness rouses the
Whites of Brooks cob >ty
SEVEN NEGROES KILLED
In the fighting which follow
ed. A Reign of mob rule
now has the country in
Jts grip. The offoers
are helpless.
Thia moningi Constitution con
tains the following special frn-n
Quitman:
A race war seems imminent in
this county over the murier of Mr
Joseph Isham.
Seven negro lives were taken yes
le’day and last night to pay the
penalty, and this seems to be only
the kegianing of the end.
Your .correspondent visited the
scene of action this afternoon and
sound a posse of three hundred
covering a *pxee of about five miles.
The largest crowd was congregated
one. and a half miles from Isham’s
house consisting of 100 men well
armed to the teeth, and about one
and a half nailes further oa there
were a mob of negros about the
same number, armed with Win
chester tides, pistols, axes, clubs,
and every hi g else conceivablef
waiting for the white mob to come
on to them.
DISCOVERY OF A CONSPIRACY.
It has been discovered that n
number of negroes had conspired
to Kill every man that was in the
posse that arrested Jerry Jeffceth
for the killing of Mr. T. Moulden
a few weeks ago, and that the kill
ing of Mr. Isham was the com
mencement to carryout this awful
conspiracy.
Wh it the outcome of this will
be in the next twenty-four ho ■
cannot be foretold. No action has
been taken to stop the mobs so far
Captian E. Tillmiti, the father
inlaw of Mr. Isham is doing all in
his p >wsr to prevent further troub
le, aud is sending all uv«r the
country for coussrvative idhu to
come aud assist him in prevailing
ou the mobs to eeaan ao imi.

The negroes killed were all shot
down oil this side of the Ocopilco
creek, about ten miles above Quit
man. The reportia that a second
posse which was scou ing the woods
north of the Oc p : lco, have killed
four other negroes.
This wholesale killing is terri
ble. but the people of thatcommu
nity have had terrible provocation.
Hardly three weeks ago Tip Maul
din, a respectable white man, was
brutally murdered on the public
r ad in the same neighbornood by
two worthless negroes. The people
were greatly incensed oyer this
murder, but the law took its course
ai d the murderers are now in jail
awaiting trial. Numbers of negroes
exulted over this murder and even
went so far as to hold a war dance
a few nights afterwards around
the spot in the road where the
murdered man’s life blood oozed
out.
This of course, enraged th* pso
pie still mors, and when Isham,
the best citizen in the community,
was cowardly murdered by one es
i his same gang, the pent up rage
end vengeance was turned loose

Mauldin s lif blood
The arresting and jailing of
Mau Id in’s murderers had no re
straining or supprptsing effect on
other lawless negro s in the neigh
borhood. Mauldin’s murderers
themselves have no more regrets
for their deed and no more com
punction of conscience than a dog.
The posse which did last night's
terrible work is still banded to
gether doggedly and determinedly
looking for Waverly Fike. The re
cord of tonight and tomorrow re
mains to be seen. Brooks county
is aroused. The wholesale killing
of negroes not directly connect d
with Isham’s murder is severely |
condemned and it is hoped that
the avenging mob will do no more
of this mad work.
