Klamath Falls, Ore., December 29. —News has just reached here that a most horrible holocaust occurred at Silver Lake, Lake county, Ore gon, on Christmas eve, in which forty-one persons were burned to death and sixteen badly injured, five of whom will die. A large crowd had gathered in i Christman Brothers’ hall to attend | a Christmas tree festival. While the festivities were at ' their height, some one climbed on , a bench from which he expected to I get n better view of what was going /on. In doing so, his head struck 1 a lamp hanging from the ceiling overturning it. The oil immediately exught fire and everything in the room being dry and of an inflamable nature, the rooun was soon a mass of flames. ■Some one shouted, “Shut the door and keep quiet; itjcanjbe put out.” By this time, the confusion was so great that people began scrambling in wild endeavor to reach the door. Women and children were tram pled.under foot and as there was I only one exit to the ball and the ■ fire being between the majority of the crowd and the door, many rushed headlong into the flames Mrs. Cooper Dead. Yerterday morning at 10 o’clock at her home in the Fourth Ward Mrs. Agnes Cooper, mother of offi cer Drew Cooper, of the Romo po lice force, quietly breathed her last. Mrs. Cooper is one of the oldest residents of the ceuuty and was loved and esteemed for her many . noble traits of character, by a: who knew her. The funeral will occur today at Pleasant Valley, five miles out on the Summerville Pike, after which the remains will be laid to rest in the family burying lot. A good woman has gone to her reward. Murdered His Wife and Suicide! New Orleans, Dec 29 Alb Murdoch, bmthsr of lira. Ad« Jenks,'the celebrated witness be fore the| congressional committee in reconstruction days, murdered his wife and then committed sui cide here to night. The cause of the tragedy is unknown. He was a shiftless man, very quarrelsome in dispositien and had JJfigured in several scrapes. On last Wednesday at the home of the bride, over in Texas Valley district, Rev, S. A. Harris offici ated at a wedding in which the lives of Miss Lou Davis and Mr. Taylor Rhinehart were united . Lawrenceville, Ga. Dec. 29—About 1 o’clock this morning a spark from a passing engine set fire to a bale of cotton on the platform of the depot. Before help could be had thir ty bales were destroyed.
