As the result of an official in

French navy, it has been found
that, out of forty torpedo boats in
the service, only twenty-five were
fit for service. Most of these boats
were rendered unsafe by the cor

many defects were discovered in
their general arr ingement. This
stat® of affairs is very unsatisfac

HYPNOTISM AND WITCHERY
The conse-vative Savannah News
on account of the recent growth of
hypnotic methods is led to ask in
all seriousness: “Are we drifting
bac k to the days of the witches es
Salem; or still further back to the
days of the enchanters and soreer
ers of medical times?
What is this new thing hypno
tism, leading us to, anyhow? A few
days ago Prof. Reck, a "hypnotist,
putin an appearance at New Rie
gel, 0., and delivered a lecture to
about 100 citizens. It seems that'
he hypnotised his whole
and tranaferred t> e ch of h-m a
part of hie powers.
The following day business was
suspended in the town and nearly
the whole populance was on the
streets practicing and experiencing
hypnotism. People wilk-d tha
streets imagining themselves cats,
dogs, monkeys, donkeys and othe r
animals, and conducting them
selves as such animals are went to
do.
Others imagined themselves or
ators and made speeches,
while still others, without tasting
liquor bee ams drunken men and
hung themselves upon fences and
lamp-posts while they sang maud
lin songs.
The few citizens who escaped
scent of the enchanter —the mayor
among them —had hard work to
bring the bewitched people back to
their right minds. When reason
was restored, however, they wanted
to lynch the hypnotist.
The practice of hypnotism in
that town is now prohibited by
an ordiance which provides a pen
alty of fine and imprisonment.
