A too liberal law regarding elec
tion contests is already being ex
perienced by congress. From the
large batches of testimony already
received by the clerk of the house
of representa’ives, it is estimated
that the printing of all documents
relating to the conteejre the next
house will be called upon to decide,
will cost the government SIOO,OOO.
The last house also established a
dangerous precedent by allowing
thres contestants —Messrs. Settle;
Childs and Williams —$4,500 each
for expenses, instead of $2,000 usu
ally allowed. It is now extremely
probable that every contestant
whoso case is examined into by the
elections committee of the next
house, will endeavor to obtain a
similar amount. The feeling is
growing with both democrats and
republicans that something will
have to be done to stop senseless
and uselees contests and the propo
sition has already been made to
pay the expenses only of the man
entitled to the disputed seat. This
will leave Dr. Felton out in the
cold.—Marietta Journal.
