Jag, Eating Rotten Apples,
Newton, N, J., June 10.—It is
i* not often that a cow gets drunk
and acts like a man with a jag.
1 But a Sussex County cow went on
s a spree recently. Washington Lam
- bert, a well-known farmer, tells
about it, and his language is as
follows l
, '“lt was up to Ila m Sice’s
■ place. Sice’s cow went wrong all
t of a sudden. Instead of giving 10
1 or 15 quarts of milk daily she
f dropped to three, and seemed to
ido nothing but’lay around in the
. )>asture.
I Harm thought she was pretty
I sick, and sent for a cow doctor. He
came and looked at her, and said
i that he reckoned that there wasn’t
much the matter with her,, and
> told Harm to watch her for a Cou
ple of days ants he’d drop ih again.
Harm watched her, and found
t iat she was in a terrible state
next morning, but after being
turned out for a couple of hours
she got kinder frisky and pranced
around in great shape; then she
went and laid down in the shade
of the bam and locked like she
was dead for hours.
He kept watching her, and when
she got up he followed her, as She
staggered over to the comet of the
lot, aud then he saw the cause of
the whole business. The cow was
on a spree—a regular old bat.
Harm’s old woman had been I
trying a scientific experiment in
keeping winter apples, and it was
not a success. She had sorted out
four barrels of rotten apples, and
the oddest boy had carried them
out of the cellar and dumped them
over the fence into the pasture
lot.
The cow found them and wont 1
on a four days’ drunk. She had 1
eit until she was boozy, and then '
laydown. When she got up feeling *
rockj' she’d just go and get a hair (
of the same “dog that bit her. Most ‘
anybody that has ever had a dose '■
of hard cider can sympathize with '
that cow. When II rm told me I
about it I said he’d better give her !
bromide for her nerves. He covered 1
up the rotten apples, and after a 1
couple of days of distress the cow
came back to her milk.”
