THE SHE MAN
And The Female Bicyclist Strong
ly Pondenmed by Ladies.
Boston, Mass., June 11.—The
Woman’s Rescue League has adop
ted resolutions of timely interest,
declaring that the bicycle woman
aud the coming “mannish” woman
are productive of much harm and
no real good to the industrious and
self-supporting woman whocreates
80 per cent of the wealth in all the
light manufacturing industries in
this country.
These women are entitled to po
litical recognition by our lawma
kers because they help create the
wealth of the nation, while the
sporting woman, the mannish
woman and the bicycle woman
bring disgrace on the true woman
ly woman.
The league condemns bicycle
riding by young girls and women
for the reasons: Thirty per cent of
the fast girls that hare come to
the Rescue League for aid were bi
cycle riders at one time. It is re
solved that since the closing up of
the houses of ill-repute in Boston
the sporting girls are taking to bi
cycle riding because they can bet
ter ply their vocation on account
of the opportunities given as cyc
lists.
An appeal is made to the promi
nent clergy of the United Stab s
for the suppression of bicycle rid
ing by young girls because of the
tendency to encourage immorali
ty. The league further condemns
the coming mannish woman as a
creature entirely useless and an
unnecessary evili n this country
which should not be tolerated or
-’neouraged.

was struck, which necessitated
blasting. After the smoke had dis
appeared the workmen were sur
prised to fibd, instead of the water
expected, that the bottom had
dropped out, and they looked down
into what appeared a botton Uss
pit.
Wednesday evening three young
men descended by means of ropes
o a depth of 70 feet, wh«re they
found a landing, with a nartow
passage leading downward at an
incline.
With much difficulty the party
followed the passage, wnich grad
ually increased in width to about
50 feet. In the moss covering the
sides of the cave were discovered
curious reptiles, and huge bats flew
about their heads.
A swiftly rushing stream sever
al rods in width, which was filled
with eyeless fish, stopped their
progress, and they were forced to
return.
Thursday morning the search
was resumed, and after much diffi
culty the stream was crossed, and
the cave explored for over a mile.
Deep gorges, seemingly bottom
less, were encountered, from which
a white mist ascended, and a rum
ble as of falling water was heard.
A lot of glittering metal, supposed
to be geld, was brought hack by
the explorers, but it proved to be
worthless.

A brutal boy Pursued a little Girl
Causing her Deatn
Delphi, Ind., June 11. — of
the.saddest tragedies enacted in
this neighborhood recently is re
ported from Sitka, a small town
in the adjoining county of White
A few evenings ago Bernice Col
lins, the eight-year-old daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. George Collins,
went to the little town to procure
some paper on which to write a
letter to her father, who is confined
in the asylum at Logansport. On
her return she met three small
boys who were herding cattle along
the road.
She had had a child's quarrel
with one of. the youngsters and
spoke to two of them, but refused
to sjieak to the third. This angered
him and be followed her, cursing
her and throwing stones. She ran
home, pursued by the boy, who
struck her with several s.tone* as
she ran.
When she reached home she was
in an exhausted condition and the
physician who was summoned an
nounced at once that she was suf
fering from internal hemorrhage
by her exhaustive run and by be
ing struck in the back by a stone.
The child sank gradually and died
Wednesday evening
One of the sad features of the
case was breaking the news to the
father, who had so far recovered as
to warrant his removal home from
the asylum in a few days. The an
n uncement of the de th of his
favi ri.be child fell with crushing
effect up< n him, and the physician
at the asylum fear a recurrence of
his malady.
