Talk nl'oy,t a newspaper man
starving—v.hy no one ever heard
o f such a fate oveitaking a pencil
pusher. But my, my, how hungry
they can get! at the hour, today
when men who eat, were hurrying
home,'and I was working doubly
hard to keep from thinking about
what “might have been’’—but
wasn’t—on my home table, why
my sanctum sanctorum door open
ed and a neat looking, white cap
ped, white aproned colored woman
stepped lightly in and deposited a
mammoth waiter upon the wing
of my desk “Mjss Louise says you
jes stop that skriblin and set ’roun
hear an’ eat yer dinner” and be
fore I could recover consciousness
she had vanished —leaving the
waiter.
»*»
And such a feast as that waiter
contained. There were vegetables
and Kake and ice Kream and
salads and ice-tea and roast beef
and chicken pie to say nothing of
the roast goose which, for all I
know was chicken or turkey.
“Jacco,” My “dev,il,” stood over
me with the office towell and let
me do my best from 1 o’clock un
til ten minutes to 2, when he “per
suaded” me to rest while he finish
ed the task. Jack is a healthy-eater
with a coming-ap pet ite-’im self
and he put in sixty-five minutes
in hiding the balance of the feast.
At this hour, 4 p. m. I am only
sufficiently recovered to extend a
skirmi-h line of the mainbody of
my thanks. Miss Louise Gomez,
the beautiful and accomplished
daughter of Mine host of the Cen.
tral, is my patron saint. I h mest
ly believe I shall now last until
