Live Oak, Fin., June 12.—Three
more negroes have been done to
death by LaFayettcounty citizens
for assault upon a white woman.
The woman upon whom the cut
rage was attempted is Miss Jean
nette Allen, 18 years old, and the
belle of LaFayette county. Friday
morning about 3 o’clock Miss Al
len was awakened by a noise in her
room.
As she moved her arm was clutch
ed by a negro whom she recogniz
ed as Bill Collins, one of her fath
er’s employes. The negro threaten
ed the girl with dtath if she made
a noise, but Miss Allen gave a
scream which alarmed the house
hold.
The negro was chased all Friday
and about nightfall was captured.
Collins was identified by Miss Al
len, but while preparations were be
ing made to lynch him, he escap
ed.
All Saturday and Saturday night
the negro was persued. The chase
led through the phosphate regions,
where negroes are numerous, and
two of Collins’ friends attempted
to conceal him.
These two negroes were shot by
the persuers and their bodies were
placed on the railroad track, where
they were cut to pieces by passing
trains. The mangled r*miins of
these two negroes were discovered
Sunday morning, several trains
having passed over the bodies and
identification was impossible.
Collins was recaptured by the
pursuers early Sunday morning.
He was taken to the scene of the
attempted outrage and notices sent
out for people to gather to aid in
lynching him.
A great crowd assembled at
noon Sunday on the banks of the
Swanee river, where the negro was
hanged and his body riddled with
bullets. The corpse was then cut
down, weighted with stones and
thrown into the river.
In eight months fourteen ne
groes have been put to death in La
