From this morning’s Atlanta
Constitution I clip the following
pretty little story which well illus
trates the man and indexes the
great heart that throbs in his honest
bosom:
* *
*
“A sorrier looking turnout than
>ne which picked its way along
Whitehall street the other day has
never come from the hipne of wid
owhood or poverty. A' jaded and
sprained mule with stiff and knot
ty Jimi is and tbip sides toiled pain
fully along, drawing behind hint a
battered ramshackle old buggy that
seemed to have stood the service
of many years. The Harness .was
tied together in many places and
seemed in momentary peril of
coming to pieces again.' The old
buggy tottered along as if it might
colapse at any moment.
“A patient looking woman, ip a
faded poke bonnet and a homespun
dress sat in the frail vehicle an 3
guided the wavering steps of the
worn-out inule.
“Suddenly, the mule stopped mill
>ne of shafts dropped down—a
piece.df the harness had brokeji
file poor woman gazed.at the wreck
with calamity written ip her face.
For a full minute she surveyed it
without moving, and then looked
. around for some‘friendly face Tin
sidewalk was crowded with people,
and the street was full, but all wen
hurrying on, and nd one paid the
i slightest attention to the woman.
| Slowly she began to docend from
her seat.

■ Just at. tliis moment a passing
carriage halted and a gentleman
dighted. He spoke to the woman
iii a kindly tone and offered to as

the offer and stood by almost
tremblingly while ho worked a\va\

A man who was passing noticed
the almost tearful gratitude of the
ppor woman as the carriage drove
iway, and stepping up to her he
said:
“Do you know who that was
that fixed your hariiess?”-
The woman shook her head.
“That waß tlie governor of the
