DEAFNESS CANNOT BE CURED
by local applications, as they can
not reach the diseased portion of
the ear. There is only one way to
cure Deafi ess, and that is by con

caused by an inflamed condition
of the mucous lining of the Eus
tachian Tube. When this tube gets
inflamed you have a rumbling
sound or imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed Deafness
is the result, and unless the infla

tube restored to its normal condi

Such a declaration as the follow- '

estimation of true and sturdy dem- (

LORD BERESFORD
It seems that “My Lord” Beres
ford is to have quite a mountain to
climb before he reaches the goal.
For some time it was thought the
■ prosecutors in the original case
i were in favor of Beresford’s par
i don, but it appears now that Col.
* Hamilton can see no reason why
I the unfortunate young man should
■ receiva executive clemency.
No reasonable man believes the
fishy tales David Bennett King has
written the governor. They smack
too much of reverge and show too
plainly that King’s avaricious de
sires are behind this malignity.
We have as much sympathy with
1 the proper maintainance of the
law as any good and honored citi
zen, but. we are of the opinion this
" cruel and unrelenting animosity
exhibited towards the poor and de
spised is not very commendable or
in accord with th* di inet'acU gs
of the holy writ. We presumably
five in an enlightened age where
mercy blends in sweet unison with
justice. Is this a delusion? It would
seem so if we measure the spirit
* of the times by the venom mani
. festod in poor Beresford’s case.
C The object of the low is not to
persecute but to punish the viola
tor and to deter others from wrong
doing.
This pi or young man has had the

In honor of the victory over Cnina.
The populace were compelled to
display flags and bunting in strict
obedience to the emp Tor's edict
whom they defy. But it could be
plainly seen 'he demonstration
was of a very tame nature, little
enthusiasm and rejoicing. The I
people are in a very disgruntled I
state out of humor and entertain |
intense hatred toward the big bul
ly Russia.
At present there is but one thing
which holds the smouldering flames
of hate within the bosoms of the
Japan people and that is the diffi
culties they are encountering with
the inhabitants of Formosa.
It seems these people have de
clared themselves a republic and
refuse to come under the dominion
of their conquer ts. The relations
of Russia towards them are simply
those of a well equiped nation of
over one hundred million peopL
dictating to a small island of
scarcely forty millions of souls.
Not only did Russia demand a re
traction of Japan’s demand uppn
China, but Germany and France
joined in this command.
Every American heart beats
with sympathy for this brave little
island. They would join, not
in force with her, but in bidding
her God speed to a glorious victory
over this cowardly, menacing and
robbing nation which has more
men and army than conscience
and morals. We feel constrained
to make the wish that Russia m ly
lose every vessel in her navy by
the guns of the Japanese ships.
We glory in Japan’s bravery, but
we despise the mean, contemptible
and high-handed spirit of the
thieving Russia.
