Washington, December 6.
Speaker Reed haa not oui grown
that old desire to unseat democrat
ic members of the house and put
republicans in their seats.
There are thirty-three centests
entered Reed wants to get through
with them quickly and to do this
Intends to divide up he election
committee or make two or three
committees on elections.
His present idea is to make three
committees and give each eleven
cases to handle. To do this will
take a teet lution of the house.
But that can easily be adopted .
Reed wants to oust all tne demo -
erats that should in lepdblican
judgement be ousted at once, and
seat republicans in their places.
But he will seat no populists.
There are two Georgia contests,
bat t ley will a n mat io not ring
havingno foundation whatever.
Dr. Felton is contesting Judge
Maddox’s seat and Tom Watson is
making his last grand stand play
in claiming Major Black’s seat.
Another matter Reed is con
templating and in it he is endorsed
by the democratic leaders, is a re
fusal to allow contest fee« to con
tsstants unless they develop suc-
cases; that is, evidence
which brings a favorable report
from the committee, as is eo evi
dent that some contests are brought
limply for the fee of $2,000 usually
allowed that thia has been made
almost necessary.
Such will shut Tom Watson and
Dr. Felton out. It would take the
clearest and strongest evidence,
indisputable, for the republic ms to
seat Watson. The have not forgot

SITUATION AB TO VENEZUELA.
No additional news of the con
troversy between England and the j
Lnited States over the Venezuelan i
q lestion has developed today. ’
Every one is awaiting the coming!
of Salisbury's reply ,
Colonel Livingston is among
the intensely interested members.
He was in Venezuela last summer
and understands the situation.
England, he says, is encoaching
without right or justice upon
Venezuelan soil because ic is valu
able. This government, he says,
cannot submit to England exUnd
in g her territory upon this Con
ti net.
The Georgia congressman 1-
laves in governments being asi
nervy as individuals, and favors |
the United States acting firmly up- 1
on the Monroe doctrine. He is for
war if necessary, to preVent Eng
land’s encroachments. England
cannot afford war with the United
State right now whatev-r might b
he conditions in Venezuela. She is;
too much occupied with far Eastern |
complica ions with Russia. The!
Venezulan boundary matters is of
small import compared with the
protection of her great intere-ts in
the East by preventing Russia ex
tending her possessions to the
South.
Should England and the United
States begin to burn powder over
the Vei ezuelan boundary, Russia
would immediately assume pos
session of what she wants in the
East and England would be in
volved in war with two of the
most powerful nations on earth at
the same time and in different
quarters of the globe. Whether
England could afford a brush with
us or not the statesmen are agreed
that the Munroe doctrine should
aud must be enforced to the let
ter.

Columbia, S. C., Dec. 6. The
details of an ugly lynching which
occurred in this state Monday
night has come to light. It took
place down in Colleton county,
near the Ba.-nwell and Hampton

in that vicinity until Wednesday
morning, when the dead bodies of
two of the victims stripped of their
clothing were found—one being un
old woman. They had been taken
out and beaten to death with new
buggy traces, the man’s offence be
ing that he as suspected of hav

Liquor seems to be t'ie only ex

can be.
The affair occurred in Broston
township, Colleton county, at
Broxton bridge, or ford, as it is
req lently called.
several months ago St, Nicho
las church in Barnwell county was
broken open and robbed, a Bible
and some pulpit furniture being
taken away. A young negro named
Isom Kearae, who disappeared
from the neighborhood about that
time, was suspected of being the
tbisf. He had become somewhat
notorious for thefts and had been
suspected of burning a store some
time ago.
In some way four Barnwell men
had gotten information that he
was at his old mother’s home, near
Broxton ford, and they went over
there on Monday night last. These
men got two men from the neigh
borhood to assist them, one being
Frank Hiers, They then went to
Isom’s - house. .They found him
just coming out of the door.
The party took the negro, put a
rope around his neck and tied him
