London, June B.—The marquis of Landed owufe, secretary of state for war, has received a telegram dated Akasheh, June 7th, from Sir Herbert Kitchener, sirdar of the Egyptian army, saying: “We surprised the enemy at dawn at Firket. They resisted gal lantly, holding the hills and vil lage, but were completely defeat ed and their retreat ci.t oil. We captured their camp and all their camels, horses and provisions. Paid a Visit to Americ ans Im prisoned on the Isfand ana Makes a request to Weyler* Havana, June B.—Consul Gener. al Fitzhugh T.ee today visited the men who were captured on the fi - ibustering American schooner Competitor, and who are now con fined in the Cabana fortress under sentence of death. Lieneral JLee found the prisoners Judged in unhealthy quarters and will request Captain General Weyler to order that they be given better accomodations. The con sul general also saw Jelio San guilly, an American citizen, who is under sentence of life imprison ment for conspiracy agaist the peace of Spain, an d whoese case on apeal is now before the court of occaesion in Madrid. It is said that General Lee, as a special favor, requested Captain General Weyler to release Mr. Dawley, the correspondent of Harper’s Weekly, who was arrest ed a few days ago. The request was granted and it is expected that Dawley will be released from Mor ro castle tomorrow. CUBAN WOMEN FIGHT FORTHEIR | HOMES. The Cuban i women have such a dread of Spanish brutality that any of them prefer fighting on the battle *ield hesibe their husbands ai d brothers to being thrown into the forts at the Spaniards’meriy. In Maceo’s recent attack on the trocha these Amazons took part and fought fiercely, using machet es on the Spaniards. The attaetk was made north of San Marcos and General Bermudez crossed in to Havana with 1,500 men MaY Fight A Duel uet. Madrid. June 8. —The Campos- Borrero affair continues the sen sation of the hour., It appears that the Captain General Ma drid went to the grounds $f the Marquis of Cabrinana, which was the rendezvous of the disputants, prevented the duel. The Marquis tried to stop the Captain General from entering his grounds, but the latter asserted his military author ity, entered and placed the com batants under arrest. It is believed that the duel will yet occur on the earliest possible occasion. General Borrero has many partisans, especially among the young officers of the army. Jules Simon Dying Paris, June B—M.8 —M. Jule Fran cois Simon, the eelebeated states man, life member of the French Senate, member of the French Academy, perpetual secretary of the Moral and Political Sciences and formerly Prime Miniate, of France, is in a dying condition. M. Simon has been ill for a fort night, with necrosis of the stom ach, but he suddenly became worse today, and his family was summoned to his bedtide. He is 82 years old. Cincinnati, 0., June 8. —JhF<re eults of the democratic cotintj convention held in Ohio Saturday show' that if there had been any doubt of the outcome of the State convention on the money question none now remains. It is now conceded by all that the state convention to be held Columbus on June 23rd will de clare foi the free and unlimited coinage of silver at 16 to 1. The go'd men have given up the fight and will make no contest. Word reaches here that Brice has sur rendered, and while he will at tend the convention he will make no effort for gold. EVERY ONE FOR SILVER. Fifteen county convention*, were held Saturday and everyotw declared for free silver. FREE COINAGE IN INDIANA. Indianapolis, Ind., June 8. — Conventions to nominate Officer® and select delegates to the state convention were held in elevee counties by the democrats Satur day and in every instance the free silver men were in control and instructed the delegates to vote for a silver platform . In several places the gold standard me® made a fight, but were outnum bered.
